 Gary Glitter, the former British glam-rock star whose real name is Paul Gadd, is once again at the center of international attention. His long history of sexual offences and a newly postponed Netflix documentary come under renewed scrutiny.

Glitter, now 82, is serving a 16-year prison sentence after his 2015 conviction for historical sexual offences against three girls, and he is also awaiting trial on eight additional allegations relating to another girl.

From Glam-Rock Fame to Criminal Convictions

Glitter became one of Britain's most recognizable performers during the 1970s glam-rock era. Hits including “Rock and Roll (Part 2),” “I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me” made him an international star.

Behind that public image, however, Glitter accumulated a criminal record involving child sexual abuse and child sexual-abuse material.

In 1999, Glitter pleaded guilty in Britain to 54 offences involving indecent images of children. Contemporary reporting said the collection contained approximately 4,000 images. He was sentenced to four months in prison and served about half of that sentence.

The criminal proceedings did not end there. Glitter was expelled from Cambodia in 2002 amid allegations concerning sexual offences, although the expulsion itself was not a criminal conviction.

Gary Glitter-Vietnam Conviction 

Glitter later moved to Vietnam, where he was arrested in November 2005 while attempting to leave the country.

In March 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him of committing obscene acts involving two girls. Reports identified the victims as 10 and 11 years old. He received a three-year prison sentence and was ordered to be deported after serving it. A Vietnamese appeals court subsequently upheld the conviction and sentence.

Glitter was eventually released and returned to Britain in 2008. His Vietnam conviction became another major part of the criminal history surrounding the former performer.

The 2015 UK Conviction

Glitter's most consequential British conviction came in 2015 following an investigation that began in the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

A Southwark Crown Court jury convicted him of six offences involving three girls. The convictions included one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13. The offences dated from the 1970s and involved victims who were children at the time.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

The court heard evidence concerning three victims, including one who was under 10 at the time of an alleged attempted rape and two others who were 12 and 13. Glitter had denied the allegations, but the jury found him guilty of the six charges for which he was convicted.

Current Prison Status of Gary Glitter

In February 2023, Glitter was released from prison after serving approximately half of his 16-year sentence. His release was subject to licence conditions.

He was subsequently recalled to prison after breaching those conditions.

As of September 2026, Glitter remains in custody in England. Recent reports identify HMP Channings Wood in Devon as the prison from which he appeared by video link for his latest court hearing.

His current legal situation is particularly important because the new allegations have not yet been proven in court.

Eight New Historical Sex-Offence Charges

In September 2026, Glitter appeared by video link before Southwark Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to eight historical sexual-offence charges involving a single girl.

The allegations concern conduct said to have occurred between 1978 and 1981, when the complainant was between eight and 11 years old.

The eight charges consist of four counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child and two counts of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13. Glitter denied all eight charges.

A three-week trial is scheduled to begin at Southwark Crown Court on November 22, 2027. Glitter has been remanded in custody pending the proceedings.

Because the case is pending, allegations concerning the new charges should be distinguished from Glitter's previous convictions. The latest charges remain allegations unless and until determined by a court.

The Gary Glitter Band

The musical history surrounding Gary Glitter also includes a distinction that is sometimes lost in accounts of his career: Gary Glitter and the Glitter Band were not simply the same musical entity.

Glitter's early live backing musicians were initially known as the Glittermen. In 1973, they became known as the Glitter Band and subsequently established a recording career of their own. The group included musicians such as John Rossall, Gerry Shephard, Pete Phipps, John Springate, Tony Leonard and Harvey Ellison.

The Glitter Band went on to have seven UK Top 20 singles during the mid-1970s and released three hit albums. Among its best-known recordings were “Angel Face” and “Goodbye My Love,” demonstrating that the musicians developed a career beyond their role as Glitter's backing group.

The band's history subsequently continued through various lineups and legal disputes over the use of the Glitter name. Musicians associated with the group continued performing in later decades, making the band's history distinct from the criminal history of Paul Gadd (Gary Glitter).

Netflix's “Hunting Gary Glitter” Documentary Postponed

Netflix's planned three-part documentary, “Hunting Gary Glitter,” has added a new dimension to the story.

Directed by Sebastian Smith and produced by Voltage TV, the documentary was originally scheduled for release on October 14, 2026. The project follows journalists investigating Glitter's activities and movements across several countries while also focusing on survivors and the historical allegations surrounding his career.

Netflix has now postponed the documentary, citing “new legal information.” The streaming service also removed the recently released trailer from its YouTube channel.

Netflix has not disclosed what the new legal information is or provided a new release date. The postponement comes while Glitter is awaiting trial on the eight new charges, creating an obvious legal context for the decision, although Netflix has not publicly said that the pending case is the specific reason for the delay.

The documentary's eventual release could therefore depend on legal considerations surrounding the pending proceedings and the need to avoid prejudicing a future jury.
