A Gilbert Goons defendant awaiting trial in the 2023 death of Arizona teenager Preston Lord has been arrested for a third time since being released from jail and placed under electronic monitoring. Talyn Vigil, 20, was arrested Sept. 17 in Tempe after police said he and another motorcyclist were racing and driving recklessly near Arizona State University's campus.

Vigil faces new misdemeanor allegations of reckless driving and exhibition of speed. His bond in the new case was set at $5,000, while he remains electronically monitored as he awaits trial in the Lord case. A judge also revoked his driving privileges following the latest arrest.

Police Describe Motorcycle Racing

According to Tempe police, officers observed Vigil and another rider splitting traffic, performing burnouts at intersections and participating in what authorities described as an exhibition of speed, including drag racing.

Police said the riders disregarded Arizona traffic laws and created a danger for other motorists.

Vigil appeared in court following the arrest. During the hearing, he agreed with the judge's decision to take away his driving privileges and said he would not drive himself.

The latest arrest marks the third time Vigil has been taken into custody since his release while awaiting trial in the Preston Lord case.

Previous Arrests While Awaiting Trial

Vigil was previously arrested in September 2025 after authorities accused him of violating an order of protection. He was later arrested in February 2026 on another reckless-driving allegation involving a dirt bike, according to Arizona reporting.

The latest arrest occurred while Vigil was under house arrest and GPS monitoring in connection with the Lord case.

ABC15 reported that five of the six remaining defendants in the Lord case, including Vigil, have been released under house arrest and electronic monitoring.

Preston Lord Death

Vigil is one of seven people originally charged in connection with the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord, who was beaten after leaving a Halloween party in Queen Creek on Oct. 28, 2023.

Authorities said Lord was among approximately 250 teenagers attending the party. Investigators alleged that an altercation developed as Lord and friends attempted to leave.

Lord was found severely injured and was taken to a hospital. He died two days later.

The case attracted widespread attention throughout Arizona and became connected to investigations into a group of teenagers known as the Gilbert Goons.

The Associated Press reported that seven suspects were charged in connection with Lord's fatal beating. The case has involved allegations including murder, kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

Who Are the Gilbert Goons?

The term Gilbert Goons refers to a group that Arizona law enforcement ultimately classified as a hybrid criminal street gang.

Scottsdale-based attorney Richard Lyons, described the defendants as “mostly rich, entitled white kids who want to be gangsters.”

The Town of Gilbert's official announcement said a multi-agency investigation concluded in May 2024 that the group met Arizona's statutory requirements for documentation as a criminal street gang. Officials emphasized, however, that gang membership itself was not a crime and said investigators did not have sufficient evidence at that time to submit additional gang-participation charges.

According to the town, the group began in Gilbert and included young people from several East Valley communities. Authorities said its early activities included underage drinking, illicit drug use and what police described as a “fight club” arrangement before investigators identified other alleged criminal behavior.

Arizona PBS and The Arizona Republic have reported that the group became associated with a series of alleged assaults involving teenagers in communities including Gilbert and Queen Creek.

Vigil Among Six Defendants Awaiting Trial

Vigil was one of seven people initially charged in Lord's death. William “Owen” Hines reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to current Arizona reporting.

The remaining defendants, including Vigil, continue to face proceedings in the case.

Vigil, Talan Renner and Jacob Meisner were charged as adults. Prosecutors allege Vigil was involved in the attack that resulted in Lord's death. Those allegations remain subject to the criminal court process.

The defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Gilbert Goons Investigation Continues to Draw Attention

The Gilbert Goons investigation prompted multiple East Valley law enforcement agencies to review earlier reports of teen violence.

ABC15 reported that investigators initially said they had limited documentation connecting reported crimes to the name “Gilbert Goons.” As the investigation progressed, authorities said victims and other information provided additional references to the group.

The investigation eventually resulted in the formal classification of the group as a hybrid criminal street gang, although authorities said the classification did not automatically establish that individual defendants in separate criminal cases participated in gang-related crimes.

Vigil's latest arrest adds another development to the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the death of Preston Lord. His new traffic case will proceed separately from the murder case, while prosecutors continue to pursue the charges arising from Lord's death.
