Gold Price Drop Defies Safe-Haven Status Amid Iran Conflict

Gold Price Drop

In a twist that has left investors recalibrating their instincts, the Gold price drop is unfolding even as geopolitical tensions escalate. The war involving Iran has disrupted global oil flows, damaged energy infrastructure, and intensified fears of a prolonged conflict—yet gold, long seen as a financial refuge, is losing ground.

The precious metal has plunged nearly 10% this week, putting it on track for its worst weekly performance in 43 years. Since the conflict began, gold has fallen by about 13%, a sharp reversal from its expected role as a crisis hedge.

Why Investors Are Turning Away From Gold

Traditionally, gold acts like a lifeboat during economic storms, attracting investors seeking protection from inflation, currency swings, and global instability. But this time, rising energy prices tied to the Middle East conflict are reshaping expectations around interest rates—and that shift is proving pivotal.

The turmoil has also fueled a rebound in the U.S. dollar, prompting investors to rethink their portfolios and reduce exposure to non-yielding assets like gold.

Interest Rates Take Center Stage

The outlook from the Federal Reserve is a key driver. Traders now expect interest rates to remain steady throughout the year, boosting the appeal of income-generating assets such as bonds while diminishing gold’s attractiveness.

According to CME FedWatch data, markets are pricing in no further rate cuts after the Fed held rates steady for the second consecutive meeting.

Gold had previously surged when the Fed cut rates three times in a row last fall. Now, with borrowing costs expected to remain elevated, bond yields are climbing—raising the opportunity cost of holding gold.

“I do think that in the recent unraveling of gold prices, higher yields have had a big role to play,” said Hardika Singh.

Global Central Banks Follow Suit

The shift is not limited to the United States. Central banks worldwide are adjusting policies in response to inflation concerns and energy market disruptions linked to the conflict.

Some, like the Reserve Bank of Australia, have even opted to raise rates, further tightening financial conditions and weighing on gold demand.

Dollar Strength Adds Pressure

The resurgence of the U.S. dollar is another major headwind. Since the conflict began, the dollar has risen 2.2%, reversing a prolonged decline.

Because gold is priced in dollars, a stronger currency makes it more expensive for international buyers—reducing demand and adding downward pressure on prices.

Historically, gold thrives in a weaker dollar environment, where it becomes more accessible to global investors. The current rebound flips that dynamic on its head.

From Record Rally to Cooling Momentum

The recent slump also reflects fading momentum after a remarkable rally. Gold surged 64% in 2025, marking its strongest annual performance since 1979, and reached a record $5,000 per troy ounce in January.

Now, prices have retreated to around $4,570 per ounce, erasing gains from the past two months.

Analysts suggest some investors are cashing out profits or selling gold to offset losses elsewhere, as enthusiasm cools.

Strategists at ING noted that “upward momentum has faded,” adding that investors are rebalancing portfolios and stepping back from what had begun to resemble a speculative surge.

A Market Turn Full of Contradictions

The Gold price drop underscores a striking paradox: even as global uncertainty intensifies, traditional safe-haven assets are not behaving as expected.

Like a compass spinning in turbulent magnetic fields, markets are signaling that today’s financial landscape is governed by new forces—where interest rates, currency strength, and investor psychology can outweigh even the most entrenched assumptions.
