Google $40B Anthropic Investment Supercharges AI Race

Google $40B Anthropic investment

A massive new funding wave is reshaping the artificial intelligence battlefield as the Google $40B Anthropic investment signals a high-stakes escalation in the global race for computing power and next-generation AI dominance.

According to Bloomberg, Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, beginning with an immediate $10 billion commitment at a $350 billion valuation, with an additional $30 billion tied to performance milestones.

New AI Model Fuels Urgency

The investment comes on the heels of Anthropic’s release of its latest model, Mythos, described by the company as its most powerful system yet.

Mythos is being rolled out cautiously to a limited group of partners due to concerns over potential misuse, particularly given its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. Despite these safeguards, the model has already surfaced in unauthorized channels—highlighting both its power and the risks it carries.

Running such advanced systems at scale requires enormous computing resources, adding urgency to Anthropic’s push for infrastructure.

Compute Power Becomes the New Currency

In today’s AI economy, access to computing capacity is as critical as oil once was—fueling innovation and determining who leads.

Competitors like OpenAI have aggressively secured resources through massive deals with cloud providers, chipmakers, and energy partners, including a recent expansion with Cerebras.

Anthropic, meanwhile, has been racing to keep pace. The company recently addressed user complaints about limits on its Claude system by securing additional infrastructure agreements.

Strategic Deals Expand Infrastructure Network

Earlier this month, Anthropic partnered with CoreWeave to boost data center capacity.

It also secured a separate $5 billion investment from Amazon as part of a broader deal that could see Anthropic spending up to $100 billion over time for roughly 5 gigawatts of computing power.

These moves form a sprawling network of partnerships designed to ensure the company can scale its models without hitting performance bottlenecks.

Google’s Dual Role: Competitor and Supplier

While Google develops its own AI models, it also plays a crucial role as a supplier to Anthropic.

The startup relies heavily on Google Cloud for infrastructure, including access to tensor processing units (TPUs)—specialized chips built for AI workloads and considered a leading alternative to Nvidia processors.

Anthropic’s collaboration with Google extends further through a partnership involving Broadcom, which designs custom AI chips for Google. That agreement is expected to deliver multiple gigawatts of TPU-based capacity starting in 2027, with filings indicating about 3.5 gigawatts.

Expanded Capacity Under New Investment

The latest investment deepens that relationship, with Google Cloud set to provide an additional 5 gigawatts of computing capacity over the next five years, with the potential to scale even further.

This expansion effectively strengthens the backbone supporting Anthropic’s growing AI ambitions.

Valuation Surge and IPO Prospects

Anthropic’s valuation stood at $350 billion as recently as February, but investor enthusiasm has surged, with some now valuing the company at $800 billion or more.

The company is also reportedly exploring a public offering as early as October, positioning itself for a potential blockbuster IPO.

A Defining Moment in the AI Arms Race

The Google $40B Anthropic investment underscores how the AI race is no longer just about algorithms—it’s about infrastructure, capital, and strategic alliances.

Like a high-speed arms race powered by silicon and data, the outcome may hinge on who can secure the most compute, the fastest. And with billions now on the line, the competition is only accelerating.
