Tay Keith, the Grammy-nominated music producer behind some of the biggest hip-hop and pop hits of the past decade, has been found dead in his Nashville apartment at the age of 29.

Nashville police said officers conducted a welfare check and discovered Keith’s body, with no signs of foul play. An autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

Born Brytavious Chambers in Memphis, Keith rose to prominence with his distinctive, hard-hitting production style that helped define modern trap and hip-hop. He earned his first Grammy nomination in 2019 for co-producing Travis Scott’s massive hit “Sicko Mode.” He received a second nod in 2024 for Drake and 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex.”

His impressive résumé includes work with Drake, Travis Scott, Eminem, Beyoncé, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, J. Cole, Cardi B, and many others. Keith played a major role in launching Sexyy Red’s mainstream success with tracks like “Pound Town” and “Get It Sexyy,” the latter recently featured on the HBO series Euphoria.

Last year, he was named to Forbes’ prestigious 30 Under 30 Music list. Friends and collaborators remembered him as a dedicated artist who stayed connected to his Memphis roots.

BlocBoy JB, who knew Keith since they were teenagers, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, sharing phone logs showing how frequently they spoke. UK rapper AJ Tracey called him “a legend of the game” and credited him with significantly impacting his career.

Tay Keith’s sudden death at such a young age is a shocking loss for the music industry. From humble beginnings in Memphis to producing chart-topping anthems for some of the world’s biggest stars, he represented the new generation of beatmakers who helped shape the sound of modern hip-hop and beyond. His beats were energetic, innovative, and instantly recognizable — often becoming the backbone of songs that defined entire summers.

While the circumstances surrounding his passing are still under investigation, this tragedy serves as another painful reminder of how fragile life can be, even for those at the peak of their creative powers. Keith’s influence on the culture was undeniable, and his absence will be felt by artists, fans, and fellow producers alike.

As tributes continue to pour in, many are left reflecting on his brief but impactful career and the music he left behind.
