WASHINGTON, DC - Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered an unnamed federal prosecutor to present evidence to a grand jury concerning allegations that the Trump-Russia collusion narrative was deliberately fabricated for political purposes. This move follows a criminal referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who claims newly declassified documents reveal a conspiracy at the highest levels of the Obama administration to derail Donald Trump’s candidacy and presidency.

While much of the reporting on the so-called “Russia collusion hoax” has focused on the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation and the unverified Steele dossier, this latest development adds a new dimension: alleged political orchestration by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign to distract from her own legal vulnerabilities surrounding her private email server.

The Clinton Email Connection Resurfaces

The potential legal and political connection between the Russia collusion narrative and the Clinton email scandal is emerging as a central theme in the Bondi-ordered investigation.

According to recently declassified portions of the John Durham Special Counsel report—specifically an appendix that had previously been withheld from the public—the FBI received intelligence in 2016 suggesting that Clinton’s campaign had developed a plan to “vilify” Donald Trump by linking him to Russia. Critics allege this strategy was intended, in part, to divert attention from the fallout over Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as Secretary of State—a controversy that included allegations of mishandling classified information, deleting subpoenaed emails, and physically destroying mobile devices.

The most infamous examples of potential evidence destruction included reports of staffers smashing old cellphones with hammers and using “BleachBit” software to wipe email servers clean after a congressional subpoena had been issued.

FBI’s Alleged Double Standard

The handling of the two matters—the Clinton email investigation and the Trump-Russia allegations—has drawn intense scrutiny. Critics point to a perceived double standard:

  • Clinton Email Probe: The FBI’s inquiry, led by then-Director James Comey, was ultimately closed without criminal charges, despite Comey’s public statement describing Clinton’s conduct as “extremely careless” in handling classified material.
  • Trump-Russia Probe: The Crossfire Hurricane investigation was aggressively pursued, despite relying heavily on the unverified Steele dossier and other contested intelligence.

This contrast has fueled claims that the FBI’s decision-making was politically motivated and improperly tilted in favor of one presidential candidate while targeting another.

The Grand Jury’s Role

Bondi’s directive for a federal prosecutor to bring evidence before a grand jury signals a shift from political debate to legal examination. According to a letter from the Attorney General’s office, the prosecutor will present department evidence “to secure a potential indictment” if the grand jury finds probable cause.

Tulsi Gabbard has been explicit in her accusations:

“These documents detail a treasonous conspiracy by officials at the highest levels of the Obama White House to subvert the will of the American people and try to usurp the President from fulfilling his mandate.”

While no charges have been filed at this stage, the grand jury investigation is expected to scrutinize the origins of the Russia collusion narrative, the handling of intelligence by senior Obama administration officials, and whether the Clinton campaign’s alleged actions constituted criminal misconduct.

Possible Florida Venue Adds Political Weight

Speculation is growing that the grand jury proceedings could take place in Florida, the home state of both President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and Attorney General Bondi’s political base.

Political Stakes and Public Memory

The reemergence of the Clinton email scandal in the context of a Russia collusion grand jury investigation is likely to reignite partisan tensions. For years, Trump supporters have chanted “Lock her up!” at rallies, speaking of the former Secretary of State, this new investigation may be seen as a long-awaited opportunity to validate those demands.

However, legal experts caution that political optics and legal realities do not always align. The question of whether alleged actions rise to the level of criminal conduct remains for the grand jury—and potentially a trial—to decide.

A History of Political Weaponization Claims

The narrative that one political campaign weaponized federal law enforcement against another is among the most explosive allegations in modern American politics. Should the grand jury find evidence to support such claims, it could lead to unprecedented legal consequences for former senior officials.

Conversely, if the grand jury declines to indict, critics will almost certainly argue that the justice system is again shielding political elites from accountability.

Until then, the political debate will continue to play out in the court of public opinion, where the reputations of multiple high-profile figures—past and present—hang in the balance.
