Harvard’s “Alien Hunter” Just Got a White House Badge — And the Scientific Community Is Furious

INSIDE THIS REPORT

  • President Trump tapped Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb — a lightning rod in the scientific world — to lead a new White House UFO advisory council.
  • Loeb's hand-picked team includes UFO activists, a retired admiral, and a billionaire — not exactly a standard scientific panel.
  • Critics say the appointment undermines credibility; Loeb says he's just following the evidence.

WASHINGTON — The White House just handed one of America's most controversial scientists a seat at the most sensitive table in government — and the scientific establishment isn't taking it quietly.

Avi Loeb, the Harvard astronomer who has spent years insisting that alien technology may already be here on Earth, has been appointed by the Trump administration to lead a new scientific advisory council charged with investigating unidentified anomalous phenomena — what most people still call UFOs. The council reports to a newly created UAP Governance Board, operating under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

In nearly two decades covering the intersection of government power and credentialed authority, I've rarely seen a scientific appointment generate this kind of raw friction. This one is different. And understanding why requires knowing who Avi Loeb actually is.

A Brilliant Mind — With a Polarizing Track Record

Before Loeb became the face of alien-hunting in America, he was a legitimate academic heavyweight. He authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers, chaired Harvard's astronomy department for nearly a decade, and built a distinguished reputation in black hole cosmology and early galaxy formation.

Then 2017 happened.

When a strange interstellar object — later named 'Oumuamua — passed through our solar system, most scientists concluded it was a comet or an unusual chunk of space rock. Loeb looked at the same data and concluded it might be a light sail from an alien spacecraft. He published his claim, wrote a book about it, and brought it directly to the public — bypassing the peer review process that has long been the backbone of scientific credibility.

That decision defined everything that came after.

In 2023, Loeb's team dragged magnets across the floor of the Pacific Ocean near the suspected crash site of a 2014 meteor, recovering hundreds of tiny metallic spheres. Loeb suggested they might be of extraterrestrial — or even alien technological — origin. Other scientists examined the same samples and concluded they were most likely volcanic rock or coal ash.

The White House Appointment That's Rattling Researchers

Loeb's new role has put the scientific community on edge. Sean Kirkpatrick, a physicist who formerly led the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office — the government's own UAP investigative arm — made on the record statements, that Loeb is "not viewed favorably" in the scientific community and lacks national security experience. The composition of his advisory team, Kirkpatrick suggested, signals that the White House may be more interested in fringe narratives than disciplined science.

Steve Desch, an astrophysicist at Arizona State University who has directly challenged several of Loeb's theories, was blunter: "I don't know what's going to come of this, but we're not going to get any closer to answering these questions with him in charge."

The criticism isn't merely personal. At its core, it reflects a deeper institutional anxiety — that elevating Loeb to a White House advisory role lends government credibility to claims that haven't survived scientific scrutiny.

Who's Actually on Loeb's Team?

The makeup of Loeb's council is itself a story. His hand-picked group includes more than a dozen individuals — some scientists, some UFO advocates, and at least one billionaire, Ben Lamm, who is currently working on de-extincting animal species. Also on the team is retired Rear Admiral Timothy Gallaudet, who has publicly claimed the United States has recovered crashed non-human aircraft.

That's not a typical scientific advisory panel.

After the group's first meeting, it submitted a formal request to the Pentagon for more than 50 videos, images, and documents connected to known UAP incidents. Loeb says the meetings are closed, but he's committed to public briefings and a dedicated website to share findings.

What Loeb Says — And What It Means

Loeb pushed back on the idea that this appointment is about chasing alien conspiracies. He said his team is starting from the assumption that UAPs are human-made — approaching the issue as a national security question first. He's not buying into cover-up theories, either.

"My impression is the government is baffled by not being able to infer the nature of some of these objects," Loeb told me.

That's actually a measured and defensible starting point. And yet the tension is real: Loeb is a man who has publicly speculated about alien light sails and interstellar spacecraft, now leading a government-sanctioned body with access to classified Pentagon materials.

Whether that combination produces hard science or amplified speculation will depend entirely on the discipline Loeb brings — and the oversight the White House is willing to enforce.

The Pentagon's own UAP office has stated clearly it has found no evidence of alien life. Congress, meanwhile, remains divided — with some lawmakers pushing for radical transparency while others quietly worry about where this is all heading.

Loeb, characteristically, is unfazed.

"Let's keep our eyes on the orbs," he said, "not the social media."

Easy to say when you're the one holding the government badge.
