Israel conducted an airstrike on Tuesday, targeting what it identified as a senior Hezbollah commander responsible for a deadly rocket attack over the weekend. 

This attack reportedly killed several people in the same building as the commander. It was carried out using drones in the Hezbollah-dominated suburb of Beirut.

Tensions intensify in an already volatile region.

Pro-Hezbollah officials, speaking on local media channels, claim that the operation failed to kill its intended target.

Hezbollah Commander Killed

Israel issued a statement identifying the targeted commander as Fuad Shukr, also known as Hajj Mohsin. Described as the “right-hand man” to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Shukr was a senior member of the group’s jihad council. 

The United States had placed a $5 million bounty on Shukr’s head for his involvement in the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut. He had a long-standing role in anti-Western and anti-Israeli attacks.

Shukr was previously sanctioned and designated a terrorist by the U.S. government. During the 1983 bombing 241 American personnel were killed. He also aided Hezbollah forces fighting rebels in Syria, according to the Justice Department notice offering a $5 million reward for information about him.

“Hezbollah crossed the red line,” wrote Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, emphasizing the severity of the attack and Israel’s determination to respond decisively.

Lebanon has been on edge, speculating about Israel's response following a missile strike on Saturday that hit a football field in Majdal Shams, a Syrian town in the Golan Heights.

 Israel blamed Hezbollah for the attack, a charge the Iran-backed faction denied. A day later, Israel’s air force reported hitting seven Hezbollah targets deep in Lebanon.

Targeted Strikes

Tuesday evening's airstrikes appeared to be more limited but focused, targeting a residential building in Beirut's Dahieh suburb. Residents near the blast site reported hearing three explosions, and the state-run National News Agency attributed the attack to a drone firing three missiles. 

Lebanon’s public health ministry reported that one woman and two children were killed, with an additional 74 people wounded, three critically. “It shook the ground. It felt really close,” said a gas station attendant who wished to remain anonymous, describing the intensity of the blasts.

A 27-year-old architect named Jawad recounted his experience, saying, “The first missile landed, and barely a second passed before another came.” The missiles targeted the top corner of an eight-story building, causing extensive damage to the structure and surrounding area.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it had “carried out a targeted strike in Beirut on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians.” 

This statement underscores Israel’s commitment to holding Hezbollah accountable for its actions.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, telling Reuters, “We will file a complaint to the United Nations.” 

Revenge for Rocket Barrage

Although Hezbollah and Israel have been longtime adversaries, until recently there has been limited direct conflict. However, tensions escalated after Hamas’ October 7 attack against Israel and Israel’s subsequent military offensive in Gaza. 

In solidarity with Hamas, Hezbollah intensified a deadly rocket campaign along the Israel-Lebanon border, further straining relations.

Since then, the once-tense quiet on the border has given way to almost daily exchanges of fire. Both sides insist they do not seek an all-out war but remain prepared for one. The United States is intensifying diplomatic efforts to prevent hostilities from escalating into a full-scale conflict.

U.S. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel stated, “We defer to Israel to speak to its own military operations. We reiterate our clear position: Our commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad and unwavering against all Iran-backed threats, including Hezbollah.”

 This statement reaffirms the U.S.’s support for Israel while acknowledging the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict.
