A Hollywood Hills mansion with a chilling past is once again on the market. It offers potential buyers, not only luxury, but also a lingering mystery. And is known as a modern-day Hollywood haunted house.

This sprawling estate, where actress Brittany Murphy and her husband Simon Monjack tragically passed away, is now listed for $17,995,000. 

The property’s history includes an eerie association with paranormal experiences that make it one of Hollywood’s most infamous residences.

Brittany Murphy’s Untimely Death

Brittany Murphy, beloved for her roles in Clueless and 8 Mile, was just 32 when she collapsed in her Hollywood Hills home on December 20, 2009.

Despite attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The coroner’s report cited untreated pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication from prescription and over-the-counter medications as the causes.

The tragedy deepened five months later when her husband, Simon Monjack, was also found dead in the same house.

 His cause of death was similarly attributed to pneumonia and severe anemia. Speculation about the role of the house in these deaths has persisted, with some pointing to environmental factors like mold.

The mold theory was immediately dismissed by the medical examiner’s office.

Britney Spears’ Paranormal Encounter

Before Brittany Murphy owned the home, pop icon Britney Spears lived there with her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

 According to Spears’ former makeup artist, Julianne Kaye, the singer experienced a terrifying otherworldly encounter during her time at the house.

 On the We Need to Talk About Britney podcast, Kaye claimed that Spears had a reiki healing session at the property, which allegedly opened a "spirit portal."

“She swears to God that bad spirits came in and were trying to push her down the stairs,” Kaye recounted. The experience was so harrowing that Spears left the house and never returned, seeking refuge at a hotel. “She goes, 'I know you’re gonna think I’m crazy. I’m not crazy. I know what I saw. I know what I felt,'” Kaye added.

Though Murphy never reported paranormal activity, she harbored a strong dislike for the house. 

Simon Monjack revealed in a 2011 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Murphy often tried to avoid staying there. “She absolutely hated the Rising Glen house,” Monjack shared. “Every time we would drive up Sunset, Brit would say, 'Please, can we stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel?'”

 Murphy reportedly referred to the property as “unlucky.”

A Revamped Estate with a Dark Past

The home, originally built in the 1950s, has undergone extensive renovations since Murphy’s time there.

 According to the current listing by David Parnes of Carolwood Estates, the house has been “reborn,” featuring redesigned exteriors, reimagined entryways, and refreshed interiors. Despite its modern upgrades, the mansion’s haunting history remains.

The property boasts six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and spans 9,400 square feet.

 Its outdoor living spaces include lush gardens, a pool, and stunning views of Los Angeles. The home was briefly listed in the summer of 2024 for $19 million but the asking price has been reduced by one-million-dollar dollars.

Searching for New Owner of Haunted House

Over the years, the house has struggled to find a permanent owner, remaining a symbol of Hollywood’s darker side. 

Its unsettling history, combined with its luxurious features, makes it a unique and complex real estate offering. Whether its next resident will embrace its past or seek to rewrite its story remains to be seen.
