In a Sweeping Move Trump Administration Revokes Security Clearances for 37 Former Officials

Security Clearances

The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it was revoking the security clearances of 37 current and former national security officials, in what critics describe as a retaliatory strike against members of the intelligence community who clashed with the former president.

Allegations of Politicizing Intelligence

In a memo released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the officials were accused of engaging in the “politicization or weaponization of intelligence,” failing to safeguard classified information, and neglecting “professional analytic tradecraft standards.”

Gabbard defended the move in a statement on X, writing:

“Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right. Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold.”

Many of those named in the action had left government service years ago, including senior officials who helped craft the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) that concluded Russia interfered in the 2016 election to aid Donald Trump. That report, led by James Clapper, John Brennan, and James Comey, has long been a flashpoint for Trump and his allies.

A Broader Campaign Against Intelligence Officials

According to Yahoo News, the move is part of a broader Trump-era campaign to discredit career intelligence officials viewed as adversaries. Gabbard has already begun declassifying records from the Obama administration to support what she has called a “treasonous conspiracy” against Trump’s 2016 victory.

Gabbard previously revoked clearances of former President Joe Biden, and former Vice President Kamala Harris had their clearances revoked. But some attempts targeting private-sector attorneys were blocked by federal judges.

As RealClearInvestigations reported, Trump and his allies have repeatedly pointed to allegations tying the Clinton campaign to misleading narratives about Russian election interference.

 Constitutional Concerns with Security Clearances

Legal experts and former intelligence officials condemned the move as unlawful and politically motivated. Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer who also lost his clearance under the Trump administration, argued:

“These are unlawful and unconstitutional decisions that deviate from well-settled, decades-old laws and policies that sought to protect against just this type of action.”

He added that it was hypocritical for the administration to accuse others of politicizing intelligence while engaging in what he described as retaliatory purges.

Impacts on Former Officials and National Security

Stripping security clearances has implications not only for current federal employees but also for former officials whose private-sector work relies on access to classified information. Some of the 37 officials named reportedly learned of the decision only through press reports and are now considering legal action.

As the New York Post notes, the list includes Stephanie O’Sullivan and Vinh Nguyen, both of whom worked under Clapper when the disputed 2017 ICA was drafted.

The revocation underscores Trump’s deep and ongoing distrust of the intelligence community, raising concerns among critics that dissenting voices within national security circles are being silenced.
