MIAMI —  Inés Gómez Mont, a former television personality who once made international headlines by proposing to NFL superstar Tom Brady, has been arrested. She was detained by U.S. immigration authorities in Florida. She is facing three outstanding arrest warrants in Mexico which involve alleged financial crimes, money laundering and tax fraud.

Gómez Mont, 43, was taken into custody in Miami on Oct. 30, according to Mexican authorities and media reports. Her arrest follows years of investigations into an alleged financial network involving her husband, attorney and businessman Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga. Mexican prosecutors allege that the couple participated in a scheme involving billions of pesos in government contracts, shell companies and transactions designed to conceal the origin of public funds.

The case has attracted international attention because of Gómez Mont's celebrity background, the size of the alleged financial scheme and the possibility that she could be returned to Mexico to face criminal proceedings.

Who Is Inés Gómez Mont?

Before becoming the subject of an international criminal investigation, Gómez Mont was a well-known television presenter and actress in Mexico.

She built her career through appearances on major Mexican television networks, including TV Azteca and Televisa. Her work included entertainment programming, celebrity interviews and television hosting.

She became particularly recognizable to American sports audiences during Super Bowl XLII in January 2008.

While covering media day in Glendale, Arizona, Gómez Mont appeared wearing a wedding dress and veil and playfully proposed marriage to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Brady, who was preparing for the Patriots' attempt to complete a perfect season, declined the proposal. The Patriots subsequently lost 17-14 to the New York Giants in one of the most memorable Super Bowl upsets.

The unusual exchange became an international entertainment story and remains one of the most recognizable moments from Gómez Mont's television career.

Away from television, she developed a substantial social media following, reportedly reaching approximately 2.5 million Instagram followers.

She is also a mother of several children and has frequently shared family-related content with her audience.

Her public image changed dramatically in 2021 when Mexican authorities began pursuing her and her husband over alleged financial crimes.

The $160 Million Government Contract Investigation

The investigation centers on alleged financial transactions involving approximately 2.95 billion Mexican pesos, equivalent to roughly $160 million at the time of some reports.

According to Mexico's Fiscalía General de la República, or Attorney General's Office, investigators began examining the alleged network in November 2019.

Authorities allege that Gómez Mont, Álvarez Puga and other individuals were connected to a group of companies that received federal government contracts for services associated with Mexico's federal prison system.

Investigators allege that the companies used false invoices and documentation to make transactions appear legitimate, even though some of the contracted services may not have been performed.

The alleged arrangement involved seven companies and two government contracts associated with federal correctional facilities.

Prosecutors say the transactions were structured to move government money through multiple businesses, making it more difficult to identify the original source and ultimate destination of the funds.

Importantly, the approximately 2.95 billion pesos represents the value of the contracts under investigation. It has not been established that Gómez Mont personally received that entire amount.

Three Arrest Warrants and Multiple Allegations

Mexico's Attorney General Ernestina Godoy confirmed Nov. 2 that Gómez Mont has three outstanding arrest warrants issued by Mexican federal judges.

The warrants involve two principal categories of alleged criminal conduct.

Organized crime and money laundering: Prosecutors allege that Gómez Mont and her husband participated in an organized network that used companies and financial transactions to conceal the origins of money connected to government contracts.

Authorities have described a suspected system involving businesses that allegedly simulated commercial operations and transferred funds through different corporate accounts.

Aggravated tax fraud: Mexican investigators also accuse Gómez Mont of allegedly reporting less income than she actually received during the 2014 and 2016 tax years.

Prosecutors say the alleged underreporting resulted in unpaid taxes exceeding 13 million pesos, or approximately $700,000.

The tax allegations are separate from the broader investigation into government contracts and suspected money laundering.

Godoy said investigators believe money from the alleged scheme reached personal bank accounts belonging to Gómez Mont.

The Mexican government has emphasized that the alleged misuse of public funds involved money intended for the country's federal prison system.

The accusations remain allegations, and Gómez Mont has not been convicted.

Husband Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga Also Faces Investigation

Gómez Mont's husband, Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, is a lawyer and businessman whose professional activities have also attracted scrutiny from Mexican authorities.

Investigators have associated him with companies that allegedly participated in the invoicing arrangements under examination.

Some media reports have described him as the alleged central figure in a network of businesses accused of producing false invoices, sometimes referred to in Mexico as factureras.

Álvarez Puga was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami in September 2025 over immigration-related issues.

He was subsequently released on bond, according to Mexican government reporting, but remained subject to immigration proceedings and electronic monitoring.

Mexican authorities have continued efforts to secure his extradition.

The legal proceedings involving the couple are related, but their immigration cases in the United States are separate.

Why Was Gómez Mont Living in the US, not Mexico?

Gómez Mont and her husband reportedly left Mexico in 2021 after arrest warrants were issued in connection with the investigation.

The couple denied wrongdoing and challenged the accusations through their legal representatives.

In September 2021, Gómez Mont published a lengthy statement on Instagram rejecting allegations that she had received money through government contracts or participated in organized crime.

She said she had never stolen money and denied receiving the billions of pesos mentioned in media reports.

Gómez Mont described herself as a television presenter and full-time mother, arguing that authorities were unfairly portraying her as a criminal.

She also expressed concern that additional accusations could be brought against her and said she intended to defend herself through the legal system.

She ended her statement by declaring her innocence and thanking supporters who continued to stand by her.

Interpol Removes International Notices

The legal situation became more complicated in September 2026 when Interpol removed its red notices concerning Gómez Mont and Álvarez Puga.

The notices had been issued in connection with Mexico's efforts to locate the couple internationally.

The removal did not automatically cancel the Mexican arrest warrants or resolve the underlying criminal investigations.

Mexico's government criticized the decision and indicated it would continue pursuing the couple through other legal channels.

In March 2025, Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit also announced that a court ruling required the restoration of financial services to Gómez Mont and her husband after they had been removed from the country's list of blocked individuals.

That decision concerned financial restrictions and did not eliminate the outstanding arrest warrants.

ICE Detention and Potential Extradition to Mexico

Gómez Mont's Oct. 30 detention in Florida has created two separate legal proceedings.

The first involves her immigration status in the United States. Mexican officials have confirmed that her arrest was connected to cooperation between the two governments and her immigration situation.

The second involves Mexico's efforts to obtain her return so she can answer the outstanding criminal charges.

According to Mexican Attorney General Godoy, Mexico submitted a request to U.S. authorities in September 2025 seeking Gómez Mont's detention for extradition purposes.

Godoy said that if U.S. authorities deport her to Mexico, prosecutors intend to execute the outstanding arrest warrants when she arrives.

Gómez Mont's attorneys have also challenged her detention in U.S. federal court through a habeas corpus petition, which allows a detainee to contest the legality of being held.

As of Nov. 4, the proceedings remain unresolved. No final extradition decision or confirmed transfer date has been announced.

The FGR's Nov. 2 announcement and reporting by El País and El Economista distinguish her U.S. immigration detention from Mexico's criminal proceedings.

A Celebrity Story Becomes an International Legal Battle

For years, Gómez Mont was recognized for her television career, celebrity interviews and the unforgettable Super Bowl moment when she proposed to Tom Brady.

Today, her name is associated with one of Mexico's high-profile financial investigations involving alleged misuse of public contracts, shell companies and millions of dollars in suspected tax fraud and money laundering.

Mexican authorities say they want her returned to face the outstanding charges. Gómez Mont has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and maintains that she is innocent.

The coming weeks could determine whether she remains in U.S. immigration custody, is released while her immigration case proceeds or is transferred to Mexico through the applicable legal process.

For now, the former television personality's future remains uncertain as authorities on both sides of the border address the separate immigration and criminal proceedings.
