Interstellar Comet 31/ATLAS Discovered by ALMA Reveals Alien Chemistry

31ATLAS interstellar comet ALMA

The mysterious object known as 31/ATLAS, now widely discussed as an Interstellar comet discovered using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array or ALMA, is proving to be one of the most chemically unusual visitors ever observed in our solar system.

Originating from another star system, the comet—officially designated 3I/ATLAS—is offering scientists a rare opportunity to study the building blocks of alien planetary systems as it approaches its closest pass by Earth.

ALMA Detects Extreme Chemical Abundances

ALMA in Chile, a team led by NASA Astro chemist Martin Cordiner, analyzed the gases streaming off 31/ATLAS. Their findings revealed extraordinarily high levels of methanol and hydrogen cyanide, molecules closely linked to prebiotic chemistry.

“Molecules like hydrogen cyanide and methanol are at trace abundances and not the dominant constituents of our own comets,” Cordiner told New Scientist. “Here we see that, actually, in this alien comet, they’re very abundant.”

According to the team, roughly 8% of all vapors released by 31/ATLAS is methanol—about four times higher than what scientists typically observe in comets from our own solar system. The findings were described as “among the most enriched values measured in any comet.”

Why Methanol Matters

ALMA data indicate that methanol is being released both from the comet’s solid nucleus and from icy dust grains surrounding it. This suggests unusually complex chemistry occurring within or near the comet.

“It seems really chemically implausible that you could go on a path to very high chemical complexity without producing methanol,” Cordiner explained.

Because interstellar comets like 31/ATLAS are leftovers from other planetary systems, these chemical signatures may represent the raw ingredients that helped form life elsewhere in the galaxy—and possibly even on Earth.

Alien Technology or Cosmic Chemistry?

Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who has controversially suggested that 31/ATLAS could be artificial in origin, weighed in on the new data.

“The anomalously large ratio of methanol to hydrogen-cyanide production by 3I/ATLAS suggests a friendly nature for this interstellar visitor,” Loeb wrote on his blog.

While most scientists agree the object is natural, its extreme chemistry continues to cause speculation.

Stunning New Images from Spacecraft

As scientists analyze the Interstellar comet ALMA data, telescopes are capturing unprecedented views. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope observed the comet on Nov. 30 from approximately 178 million miles away, while ESA’s JUICE spacecraft spotted 31/ATLAS in a “very active state” after its closest approach to the Sun on Oct. 30.

An ESA image from Nov. 2 shows the comet glowing brightly with two distinct tails—one of dust and one of electrically charged gas.

The comet poses no threat to Earth, making its closest approach about 170 million miles away on Dec. 19.
