Japan’s aviation industry is facing a mounting pressure point, and Japan Airlines is turning to humanoid robots to help keep operations moving. Starting in May, JAL will begin deploying robots at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport in a two-year trial designed to ease a worsening workforce shortage and reshape how ground handling work is done.

The move signals a major shift in how one of Japan’s busiest airports may operate in the near future, as tourism surges and the country’s shrinking workforce collide.

Robots Step Onto the Tarmac

For now, the Chinese-made humanoid robots will be used in one of the most physically demanding airport tasks, loading and unloading cargo containers. The trial is being carried out by Japan Airlines and GMO AI & Robotics, its technology partner, according to a demonstration presented to media on Monday.

JAL, which employs around 4,000 ground handling staff, says the industry is struggling to keep up with rising demand while managing a declining working-age population.

Tourism Boom Adds Pressure

Japan’s airports are experiencing record demand as inbound tourism continues to climb. The country welcomed more than seven million foreign visitors in just the first two months of this year, according to statistics from JTB Group, which operates Japan’s largest travel agency network.

That surge has intensified pressure on ground staff already stretched thin by physically demanding work and staffing shortages.

“Back-End Operations Still Rely on Human Labor”

Despite the high-tech appearance of modern airports, industry leaders say much of the work behind the scenes remains heavily dependent on people.

"While airports appear highly automated and standardised, their back-end operations still rely heavily on human labour and face serious labour shortages," GMO AI & Robotics' president Tomohiro Uchida told reporters.

The comment underscores the gap between visible automation and the physical reality of airport logistics.

Efficiency Gains, But Limits Remain

Japan Airlines sees robotics as a way to reduce strain on workers while improving efficiency in repetitive and physically taxing roles. Future possibilities include using robots for cabin cleaning and operating ground support equipment.

"Using robots for physically demanding tasks will "provide significant benefits to employees", Kyodo news agency quoted Yoshiteru Suzuk, the president of JAL's Ground Service, saying.

However, JAL also acknowledges clear boundaries. Some essential duties, especially those tied to safety management, will remain strictly human-led.

The trial reflects a broader question facing Japan’s aviation sector: how to balance automation with the realities of safety, labor shortages, and a rapidly expanding travel market.
