jason mizell killer lawsuit

A major jason mizell killer lawsuit chapter shifted Monday as a third man admitted his role in the 2002 murder of Run-DMC legend Jam Master Jay, closing another piece of a case that has lingered for more than two decades like an unsolved rhythm that never stopped echoing.

Jay Bryant, 52, pleaded guilty in federal court in the Eastern District of New York, acknowledging his involvement in the fatal shooting of Jason Mizell inside the rapper’s Queens recording studio.

Admission of role in deadly studio ambush

Bryant told the court he knowingly helped facilitate the attack, admitting he allowed the gunmen access to the studio where Mizell was killed.

“I knew a gun was going to be used to shoot Jason Mizell,” Bryant said during his plea. “I knew that what I was doing was wrong and a crime.”

Prosecutors say Bryant did not fire the weapon but played a key supporting role in the planned ambush, including helping open a back entry to the building shortly before the shooting.

Inside the 2002 killing of a hip-hop pioneer

Mizell, a founding member of Run-DMC alongside Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, was shot on October 30, 2002, inside his studio in Queens, New York.

Authorities allege the killing stemmed from a fractured drug arrangement involving a large cocaine shipment. Prosecutors say Mizell had secured 22 pounds of cocaine intended for distribution by associates, including his godson and others, but later excluded them from the deal.

That decision, investigators argue, triggered a deadly fallout that ended in gunfire.

Prosecutors outline coordinated attack

According to trial evidence, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington entered the studio and confronted Mizell, ordering him to the floor before Jordan fired two fatal shots at close range. Washington allegedly blocked the door during the attack.

Bryant is accused of entering the studio just before the shooting and helping the assailants gain access. Prosecutors also cited DNA evidence linking him to a hat recovered at the scene.

Convictions, appeals, and ongoing legal battles

Jordan and Washington were convicted by a federal jury in 2024 for their roles in Mizell’s killing. However, Washington later won an appeal that overturned his conviction, while Jordan continues to challenge his case.

Jordan’s defense had argued he was elsewhere at the time of the murder, while also claiming prosecutors failed to prove that drug trafficking was the driving motive behind his involvement.

U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall agreed that evidence linking Jordan’s actions directly to a drug dispute was insufficient, though prosecutors had successfully argued Washington acted out of anger over the failed deal.

Legacy of a hip-hop pioneer overshadowed by violence

Beyond the courtroom, Mizell’s legacy continues to loom large in music history. As Jam Master Jay, he helped propel Run-DMC to global fame in the 1980s with hits like “It’s Tricky,” later becoming a mentor to emerging artists, including rapper 50 Cent.

While Bryant’s guilty plea marks another step toward resolution, the case remains one of hip-hop’s most haunting unresolved tragedies—an industry cornerstone silenced in a studio that once echoed with innovation.
