Justice Department Releases 3.5 Million Pages of Epstein Files, Highlighting High-Profile Connections

The Justice Department released a massive trove of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein on Friday, totaling more than 3 million pages, alongside 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. The release, mandated under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, includes documents from federal investigations, court records, FBI files, internal DOJ correspondence, and evidence collected during the probe into Epstein and his convicted associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The latest tranche, labeled Data Sets 9–12, includes over 150 newly released documents, most of them emails and internal communications. According to the DOJ, the materials were reviewed by more than 500 personnel, working nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure proper redactions protecting survivors’ privacy. All images of women except Maxwell were removed, as well as videos depicting exploited minors.

The Justice Department emphasized that some of the documents contain unverified or sensational claims about prominent individuals, including former President Donald Trump and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, which are not indicative of criminal wrongdoing. The DOJ said some submissions included false images, emails, and videos sent by the public that were incorporated into the files.

High-Profile Mentions and Alleged Connections

The documents mention numerous public figures and business leaders, including Elon Musk, Steve Bannon, Woody Allen, Steve Tisch, Bill Clinton, and Jeff Bezos. While these individuals were referenced in communications or social settings, DOJ officials have confirmed there is no evidence tying them to criminal activity related to Epstein’s crimes.

Highlights include:

  • Elon Musk and Epstein emails discussing trips to Epstein’s private island and social events around the holidays.

  • Steve Bannon and his son receiving Hermes Apple Watches from Epstein in late 2018.

  • Steve Tisch, New York Giants co-owner, receiving introductions to women from Epstein and email exchanges with guidance about interactions.

  • Howard Lutnick, Commerce Secretary, and family reportedly visiting Epstein’s island in 2012, despite prior public statements distancing themselves from Epstein.

  • Unverified claims involving Bill Gates allegedly related to extramarital sexual activity and treatment with medication, which Gates’ representatives categorically denied.

Other emails reveal interactions with socialites and public figures at parties hosted by Epstein and Maxwell, including former President Bill Clinton and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos attending a 2009 gathering at Maxwell’s residence, according to a publicist’s email.

Draft Indictments and DOJ Internal Records

The release also includes previously unpublished draft indictments from the mid-2000s. One 56-page draft proposed 30 criminal counts against Epstein and three unnamed assistants, including charges of sex trafficking, conspiracy, and enticement of minors. Another separate 60-count draft indictment was prepared by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida in 2007.

Despite these drafts, Epstein was never federally prosecuted in Florida, as then-U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta negotiated a plea deal allowing him to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges. The DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility later described Acosta’s handling of the case as showing “poor judgment.”

Legislative Oversight and Transparency Concerns

Congressional oversight remains active. Rep. Ro Khanna, a co-sponsor of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, expressed concern that roughly half of the identified documents—over 6 million pages—remain unreleased. Khanna stated that withholding records undermines public trust and shields potentially powerful individuals implicated in Epstein’s network.

Rep. Thomas Massie, another lead sponsor, requested access to unredacted files, including victim interviews, draft indictments, and internal DOJ memoranda, to fully assess government handling of the cases. Meanwhile, California Rep. Robert Garcia, top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, criticized the Trump administration for allegedly failing to release all records as required by law.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that the DOJ’s review did not aim to protect any individual, including former President Trump. He said the goal was to ensure that all releases were legally compliant and sensitive to survivors’ privacy.

Scope of the Released Materials

The documents, videos, and images provide insight into:

  • Epstein’s inner circle, including Maxwell, suspected co-conspirators, employees, and recruiters.

  • Social events, travel schedules, and correspondence with prominent figures.

  • Draft legal strategies, prosecutorial memos, and internal assessments by DOJ and FBI investigators.

  • Photographs of Epstein’s properties in Manhattan and the Virgin Islands, along with personal call logs, emails, and police reports.

The Justice Department has stated that the release process will continue on a rolling basis due to the sheer volume of materials, citing the time required to properly redact content that could identify victims. DOJ leaders said additional batches are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Public and Legal Impact

The release marks one of the most extensive public disclosures in a high-profile federal criminal investigation. Lawmakers, journalists, and the public are combing through millions of pages to better understand Epstein’s operations, Maxwell’s role, and potential involvement of others in his network.

Attorney General Pam Bondi noted that the release represents a “substantial undertaking” and unprecedented effort to provide transparency while maintaining survivor protections. Observers say the files may generate new questions about the conduct of prominent individuals and the federal government’s handling of sexual abuse investigations.
