The case of Karmelo Anthony has drawn widespread attention across Texas and beyond after the teenager was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of fellow student Austin Metcalf. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a highly emotional trial stemming from a fatal stabbing at a 2025 high school track meet in Frisco.

Jury Decides Karmelo Anthony Verdict

A jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in connection with the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The conviction came after deliberations that centered heavily on whether the stabbing was an act of self-defense.

Following the verdict, the court handed Anthony a 35-year prison sentence. Under Texas law, he will be eligible for parole after serving approximately half of that term.

The incident occurred at a track meet held at Kuykendall Stadium in April 2025, where both teenagers were participating in school athletic events.

Emotional Victim Impact Statements

During sentencing, members of Austin Metcalf’s family delivered powerful victim impact statements that underscored the lasting devastation caused by the crime.

Austin’s mother, Meghan Metcalf, addressed Anthony directly in court, expressing the permanence of her loss.

“You may have just been given a sentence of 35 years, you should feel lucky because I've been sentenced to a life without my son.”

She described Austin as a “peacemaker” and a “protector,” recalling their final morning together and emphasizing the deep emotional void left by his death.

Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, also spoke, revealing the daily pain of losing not just a sibling but his closest companion.

“You took everything from me. I wake up every morning and his door is still shut.”

Their father, Jeff Metcalf, reflected on raising his son and condemned the violence that took his life. He also addressed ongoing harassment the family has faced, including multiple swatting incidents targeting both parents.

“This was never about race. It’s about right and wrong. We are all humans.”

Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony Dispute

According to a probable cause affidavit, the deadly encounter began as a seemingly minor dispute between two teenagers who did not know each other prior to that day.

Witnesses told investigators that Austin Metcalf approached Anthony and asked him to move from under a tent designated for Austin’s team. The situation quickly escalated.

One witness reported that Anthony responded with a warning:

“Touch me and see what happens.”

When Austin allegedly attempted to physically move him, Anthony pulled a knife from his backpack and stabbed him in the chest.

Authorities stated that Anthony later admitted to the act while speaking with a responding officer.

“He put his hands on me. I told him not to.”

He also reportedly shouted, “I was protecting myself,” as officers took him into custody.

Karmelo Anthony Self-Defense Argument Rejected

Throughout the trial, Anthony’s legal defense centered on the claim of self-defense. His attorney argued that Anthony reacted to physical contact and perceived threat.

However, prosecutors challenged that narrative, emphasizing the proportionality of force and the escalation from a verbal dispute to deadly violence.

Ultimately, the jury rejected the self-defense claim, concluding that the use of lethal force was not justified under the circumstances.

This legal determination was pivotal, as self-defense claims in Texas require that the force used be both reasonable and necessary to prevent harm.

Broad Legal and Community Impacts

The case has sparked broader discussions about youth violence, conflict escalation, and the legal thresholds for self-defense in public settings such as school events.

Community members in Frisco have grappled with the aftermath, particularly given the setting—a school athletic competition meant to foster teamwork and sportsmanship.

The Metcalf family has continued to advocate for accountability while also addressing misinformation and harassment they say they have endured since the tragedy.

Karmelo Anthony Sentence

The sentencing of Karmelo Anthony to 35 years in prison closes one chapter of a deeply tragic case but leaves lasting consequences for everyone involved. For the Metcalf family, the loss remains permanent, as highlighted in their emotional courtroom statements.

The case underscores the devastating consequences that can arise from moments of conflict and the legal complexities surrounding claims of self-defense.
