On Monday, Judge William Orrick halted President Trump's moves to cut funding for sanctuary cities that refuse to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to combat illegal immigration, as reported by CNN.

Further Details about the Judge's Ruling

Firstly, Judge Orrick's ruling followed after two California counties sued the President for moving to cut funds from sanctuary cities. They claimed it to be an unconstitutional order and apparently Judge Orrick shared this viewpoint.

Had the President's order come to fruition, the U.S. government would've "strip[ped] federal grant money from the sanctuary states and cities that harbor illegal immigrants."

America's Thoughts on the Proposed Sanctuary City Order

Thoughts and opinions on President Trump's move to defund uncooperative sanctuary cities greatly varied based on partisanship. While the majority of progressives and Democrats vehemently opposed the measure, conservatives and Republicans greatly supported it. In most cases, left leaning Americans argued that revoking funds from sanctuary cities is a complete abuse of power. However, right wingers stated that cities which knowingly aid and abet criminals (illegal aliens) are inherently breaching the law themselves.

Reactions to Judge Orrick's Ruling

Liberals and others opposed to the President's aforementioned order celebrated Judge Orrick's verdict. Dennis Herrera, the attorney representing the city of San Francisco made the following public statement after the ruling:

"This is a victory for the American people and the rule of law. This executive order was unconstitutional before the ink on it was even dry. We live in a democracy. No one is above the law, including the President."

Conservatives and others took issue with Herrera's remarks, noting that sanctuary cities which harbor illegal immigrants are placing them above the law. However, those in opposition to President Trump's order did not view the matter from this perspective. Furthermore, Republicans also pointed out that Orrick was appointed by former President Obama and questioned whether or not that factor impacted his judgement on President Trump's order.
