Lux Aeterna $10M Seed Funding Fuels Ambitious Reusable Satellite Vision

Lux Aeterna $10M seed funding

A Colorado startup aiming to change how satellites operate — and survive — in space has secured fresh investment to bring its bold concept closer to reality.

With Lux Aeterna $10M seed funding, the Denver-based venture is accelerating development of a reusable spacecraft designed to return from orbit, land safely on Earth and fly again with new payloads.

The company’s first demonstration flight is now targeted for early 2027, marking a potential turning point in an industry long dominated by disposable satellites.

Startup Raises $10 Million for Reusable Satellite

Lux Aeterna announced March 10 that it raised $10 million in seed funding to develop its reusable spacecraft system.

The round was led by early-stage investment firm Konvoy, bringing Lux Aeterna’s total funding to $14 million since the company was founded in August 2024 by former SpaceX engineer Brian Taylor.

The startup’s flagship spacecraft, known as Delphi-1, is designed to survive the fiery plunge through Earth’s atmosphere — something most satellites cannot do.

Instead of burning up at the end of a mission, the spacecraft would land and be refurbished for future flights.

First Test Flight Planned for 2027

Lux Aeterna plans to conduct its first parachute drop test before the end of June, using an early prototype of the Delphi-1 vehicle.

The spacecraft itself is being built around a rigid heat shield that doubles as the satellite’s structural framework.

A critical design review initially scheduled for last year has now been moved to early April, clearing the path toward the company’s first orbital mission.

That launch is currently planned for the first quarter of 2027, when Delphi-1 will ride to low Earth orbit (LEO) on a rideshare mission aboard a rocket from SpaceX.

After completing its orbital mission, the spacecraft will attempt a controlled landing in South Australia.

According to Taylor, the inaugural flight has already been fully booked by customers.

We’re not sharing the exact mass of this specific payload,” Taylor said in an email, “but the spacecraft itself is 200 kilograms with a 30-kilogram payload capacity.”

He added that the demonstration mission will primarily validate the company’s core technology while paving the way for larger spacecraft.

Our next-generation vehicles will significantly increase this capacity,” Taylor said.

Customers Include Commercial and Defense Groups

Taylor said early customers include a blend of commercial companies and defense organizations interested in several advanced space applications.

Those include:

  • Hypersonic testing

  • On-orbit computing

  • In-space manufacturing

The startup has also signed multiple partnerships with U.S. government organizations exploring reusable spacecraft technologies.

Development Milestones and Testing Tools

To support development, Lux Aeterna has created internal tools and testing systems designed to accelerate engineering and customer integration.

One platform combines payload requirements with vehicle performance modeling, allowing potential clients to evaluate mission possibilities early in the process.

This was a pivotal factor that enabled us to secure customer commitments,” Taylor said.

The company has also built a simulation and testing system allowing engineers to run flight software and rehearse mission scenarios using spacecraft hardware.

That hardware includes the reusable heat shield material currently being developed in-house.

During reentry, autonomous flight software and a chemical propulsion system from an undisclosed supplier will guide Delphi-1 safely back to Earth.

A New Model for Satellites

Unlike traditional capsule-style reentry vehicles — where heat shields are simply external protection — Delphi-1 integrates its heat shield directly into the spacecraft’s structure.

That design allows the vehicle to operate like a conventional satellite in orbit, then return to Earth for recovery and refurbishment.

The concept could unlock new possibilities in a growing market for short-duration space missions and for retrieving hardware from orbit.

Even as reusable rockets have lowered the cost of reaching space, most satellites today still follow a launch-and-burn” lifecycle, eventually burning up in the atmosphere.

Taylor, who previously worked on satellite manufacturing at both SpaceX and Amazon, believes reusable spacecraft could fundamentally reshape that model.

The result, he said, would be lower costs, improved sustainability and greater mission flexibility.

Future Missions Already in Planning

Lux Aeterna has signed an agreement with Southern Launch to land the spacecraft at the Koonibba Test Range.

That deal also outlines plans for the spacecraft’s first reuse mission in 2028.

Taylor said interest from potential customers for the follow-up flight is already growing, though he declined to provide further details.

Expanding Team and Investor Backing

The startup currently employs 14 people and plans to grow to about 25 employees before the Delphi-1 demonstration mission.

Alongside Konvoy, several investors participated in the seed round, including:

  • Decisive Point

  • Cubit Capital

  • Wave Function

Existing investors also added follow-on funding, including:

  • Space Capital

  • Dynamo Ventures

  • Channel 39

Taylor declined to reveal Lux Aeterna’s current valuation or additional financial details.

But he offered one telling clue about investor demand.

We ultimately reached a point where we had to turn away capital,” he said — a sign that the race to build reusable spacecraft may be heating up just as rapidly as a satellite returning from orbit.
