AUSTELL, Ga. — A man died Monday afternoon after an incident on the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, and the park's parent company had temporarily shut down nine similar coasters at six parks across North America as investigators work to determine what went wrong.

Witnesses told local media that a man fell from the ride late Monday afternoon. Authorities have not confirmed how he died, have not released his name, and have not said what caused the incident. Several other people were reported injured, and riders were left stranded on the coaster until crews could evacuate them, four at a time.

What We Know So Far

The Cobb County Police Department's major crimes unit is investigating. Officials confirmed to WSB-TV that one park visitor died. Aerial video showed riders being removed from the ride, with a train of cars stopped near the top of the structure.

In a statement, Six Flags said it was "deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today," adding that its team and local authorities responded immediately and that it is cooperating fully with investigators. The company said it would withhold further details out of respect for the family's privacy.

Lisa Cupid, chair of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, said her "heart aches for the family who lost a loved one." She noted that the park is a major part of the county's tourism industry.

Goliath, according to the park's website, opened in 2006. It reaches about 70 miles per hour, climbs roughly 200 feet and runs about three and a half minutes. It is one of the signature thrill rides at the Atlanta-area park, roughly 15 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.

Nine Coasters Closed Nationwide

Six Flags announced it was temporarily closing similar attractions across its parks. "Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks," the company said, adding that "the safety of our guests and team members remains one of our highest priorities."

The closures reportedly include Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois, Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, and the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, along with similar rides at Kings Island in Ohio, Carowinds in North Carolina and Canada's Wonderland in Ontario. In total, nine coasters at six parks are affected.

The decision to shut down rides at multiple parks before a cause has been publicly identified is notable. Amusement companies typically take such a step when there is a possibility the problem could involve a design feature, restraint system or operating procedure shared across similar models. Six Flags has not said that any mechanical defect has been found.

A Troubled History at the Park

The incident revives painful memories in Georgia. According to a law firm that specializes in amusement park accidents, this is at least the seventh death at Six Flags Over Georgia over the park's history. That tally includes a 2006 case on Goliath itself, in which a rider was reported to have suffered a suspected heart attack. Park fatalities have been the subject of litigation and public debate in the state for years, including a wrongful death lawsuit that a Georgia appeals court recently reinstated.

Each past case differed in its facts, and it is far too early to say whether Monday's tragedy shares anything in common with them. But safety advocates have long argued that regulation of fixed-site amusement rides in many states is a patchwork, with oversight varying widely from one jurisdiction to the next.

Who Regulates Roller Coasters?

Unlike mobile carnival rides, which fall under the Consumer Product Safety Commission, permanent amusement park rides are generally regulated by state and local authorities. Georgia requires inspections and insurance for amusement rides, and parks follow industry standards for design, maintenance and operation. Federal officials have no routine inspection role over fixed-site rides, a gap that consumer advocates have repeatedly urged Congress to examine.

Investigators in a case like this typically review ride-control data, restraint and lap-bar mechanisms, maintenance and inspection logs, operator actions, surveillance video and witness accounts. Findings can take weeks or longer, and Goliath has been closed since the incident.

What It Means for Families

For the millions of Americans who visit theme parks each year, the incident is a stark reminder that, while serious accidents remain statistically rare, they do happen. Experts generally advise riders to follow posted height, health and restraint rules, to keep restraints secure throughout the ride, and to alert ride operators immediately if a harness or lap bar does not feel locked.

Families planning visits to affected parks should check with the park before traveling, as the temporarily closed coasters may remain offline for an unknown period. Six Flags has not provided a timeline for reopening them.

The company said it is supporting affected guests and employees. USA Herald will update this story as authorities release the victim's identity, the cause of the incident and any findings from the investigation.

This report is based on statements from Six Flags, Cobb County officials, and reporting by WSB-TV and other news outlets. Details may change as the investigation continues.
