In a surprise twist, Melania Trump has become the unexpected hero of Ukraine supporters, following President Donald Trump’s change in tone on the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukrainians are currently celebrating her support since the White House has reversed its course on Ukraine aid. 

At a White House meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday, Trump credited his wife for sharpening his perspective on Vladimir Putin's duplicity, prompting Ukrainians online to hail the first lady as a kind of secret weapon for Ukraine.

“My conversations with [Putin] are always very pleasant. I say, isn’t that a very lovely conversation? And then the missiles go off that night,” Trump said.
“I go home; I tell the first lady: I spoke with Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation. She said: Really? Another city was just hit.”

Trump then announced his administration would send Patriot missile systems to Ukraine and threatened harsh tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire was not achieved within 50 days. He also reaffirmed U.S. support for NATO, despite earlier skepticism during his first term.

Melania’s Longstanding Support for Ukraine

Melania Trump has previously taken a firmer stance on Ukraine than her husband. After Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, she used her social media platform to encourage donations to the Red Cross, calling the war “heartbreaking and horrific.” Her Eastern European background—she was born and raised in Slovenia, formerly part of Yugoslavia—has long informed her interest in global affairs.

With Trump’s apparent policy shift, many observers believe Melania’s consistent and quieter advocacy has finally tipped the scales.
