The headline Mexican cartel leader El Jardinero captured became reality Monday as Mexican security forces closed in on one of the most powerful figures in organized crime, ending a sweeping operation that unfolded like a tightening net.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of Audias Flores Silva, a senior leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, after an intense search in the western state of Nayarit.

Flores, 45—known by the alias “El Jardinero,” or “The Gardener”—was discovered hiding inside a drainage ditch as approximately 500 security personnel converged on his location.

Officials said Flores had long served as a key lieutenant to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely regarded as Mexico’s most-wanted cartel boss before his death two months ago following injuries sustained in a clash with military forces.

With El Mencho gone, Flores had emerged as one of several high-ranking figures expected to compete for control of the cartel’s vast and violent network.

Footage released by Mexico’s navy painted a cinematic scene: helicopters hovering overhead, armed personnel surrounding a rural structure, and officers advancing toward a large concrete drainage pipe—where Flores was ultimately found.

Unlike previous confrontations involving cartel leaders, officials noted that Flores did not resist arrest, marking a rare moment of surrender in a conflict often defined by gunfire.

Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch praised the operation, highlighting the discipline and coordination of naval forces involved.

International pressure and a $5 million reward

The United States had placed a $5 million bounty on Flores, underscoring his importance within transnational drug trafficking networks.

U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson described the arrest as a critical breakthrough.

“Actions like this strengthen security and help dismantle criminal networks that threaten our communities,” he said.

The arrest delivers a strategic victory for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, whose administration has faced mounting pressure—particularly from Donald Trump—to intensify efforts against drug cartels trafficking narcotics into the United States.

In anticipation of retaliation, Sheinbaum’s security cabinet deployed additional forces to the area to prevent a repeat of the wave of violence that swept through eight states following El Mencho’s death.

Aftermath: tension lingers despite calm claims

Authorities reported that cartel members responded to Flores’s capture by setting six vehicles and six businesses on fire. Despite these incidents, local officials sought to project control.

The governor of Nayarit stated there were no active roadblocks and described the situation as “calm,” even as the risk of escalation remains.
