James Safechuck and his mother, Stephanie Safechuck, are reportedly approaching sworn questioning in the long-running civil litigation over allegations that Michael Jackson abused him as a child.

According to the reported deposition schedule, James is set to testify Monday, September 14, 2026. Stephanie’s questioning is scheduled for two separate days, October 15 and October 20.

The dates mark an anticipated step in gathering evidence. They do not indicate that a judge has accepted either side’s account, and deposition schedules can change.

Safechuck and fellow accuser Wade Robson allege that Jackson’s companies, MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures, failed to protect them. The companies deny the allegations.

For readers who know the dispute through the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland, depositions offer a different setting: attorneys ask questions under oath, seek precise answers and preserve testimony for possible use in court. Stephanie’s account could matter because of the family’s access to Jackson and her role in decisions about her son’s time with him. In the 2019 HBO documentary, Stephanie described Michael’s attention as a “fairytale,” acknowledging that she became caught up in the excitement of the relationship, which could prompt questions during the depo about the trust she placed in Jackson.

If testimony differs from an earlier account, lawyers can explore the discrepancy and the witness’s explanation. California permits deposition testimony to be used to contradict or impeach a witness, subject to evidentiary requirements. An opposing party also has broader latitude to use a litigant’s own deposition. That distinction could matter when comparing James’s testimony with his mother’s. California Code of Civil Procedure section 2025.620

The process can be demanding, but it has limits. Courts may issue protective orders for good cause to prevent unwarranted embarrassment, oppression or undue burden. California Code of Civil Procedure section 2025.420

The litigation also reaches beyond the family’s relationship with a celebrity. The corporate defendants’ alleged conduct remains central: what their personnel knew, how they arranged access to Jackson and whether they failed to take protective steps.

Robson filed his complaint in May 2013; Safechuck filed in May 2014. After earlier dismissals, California’s Second District Court of Appeal reversed judgments favoring the companies on August 18, 2023. It rejected the argument that Jackson’s sole ownership, by itself, excused the corporations from a duty to protect children in the circumstances presented. Safechuck v. MJJ Productions, Inc.

That ruling allowed the claims to proceed. It did not determine that the alleged abuse occurred or award damages. For negligence claims, establishing a legal duty still leaves questions about breach, causation and injury.

Against that background, Stephanie’s testimony could help establish who arranged visits, what assurances the family received and which employees were involved, if any. James’s testimony could address his allegations, their chronology and the harm he claims.

Discovery can strengthen a claim, reveal weaknesses or change the prospects for settlement. Its significance here will depend on what the witnesses actually say and how their answers fit the other evidence. A deposition notice supplies a schedule; the testimony supplies the substance.
