Scientists stress that the number is small in appearance but significant in meaning.

“That number is small enough to sound trivial. It is not,” Space Daily states. “The same measurement, extended forward, eliminates an astronomical phenomenon that human beings happen to be alive at exactly the right moment in geological time to witness.”

The implication is clear. Over vast stretches of time, this gradual drift alters the Earth-Moon system in ways that would fundamentally change what humanity sees in the night sky.

Tidal Forces Behind the Cosmic Drift
The driving force behind this separation is tidal friction, a process rooted in gravity and motion. As the Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth, it causes the oceans to bulge and shift. That movement creates friction, which in turn transfers energy.

As a result, Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing, with days lengthening by about 1.7 milliseconds per century. At the same time, the Moon gains orbital energy, pushing it slowly into a wider orbit.

At that time, the distance between Earth and the Moon was estimated to be only 20,000 to 30,000 kilometres, a dramatically smaller gap compared to the current separation.
