NBC Helicopter Crash Shakes Los Angeles Newsroom to Its Core

nbc helicopter crash

For decades, television news helicopters have hovered over Los Angeles like a constant heartbeat above the city — familiar, almost invisible in their routine presence, tracking police chases, wildfires and Hollywood chaos from above. That heartbeat skipped Tuesday when one of those choppers, operated by the local NBC station, crashed and burst into flames while covering a fatal bus collision, turning a routine assignment into a tragedy that struck the heart of the city's own media community.

Lives Lost on Two Fronts

The crash killed the two people aboard the helicopter — journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw — along with one person on the ground. Separately, two people also died in the bus collision the crew had been dispatched to cover, meaning Tuesday's disasters claimed lives in the story and in the telling of it simultaneously.

Grief Unfolding in Real Time, On Camera

In the hours that followed, Los Angeles news anchors found themselves navigating an almost impossible task — processing raw grief while continuing to report live, essentially becoming both the messengers and the subjects of the same devastating story. The outpouring that followed revealed just how tightly woven the relationships are among colleagues working in the nation's second-largest broadcasting market.

A Reporter Rushes Toward Tragedy Twice

NBC Los Angeles' Robert Kovacik, a 22-year veteran of the station, was reporting live from a commercial intersection in Chatsworth, standing just feet from the Metro bus and SUV that had collided, when his crew's cameras caught plumes of black smoke rising behind a nearby 7-Eleven. Kovacik rushed toward that second scene — not yet knowing it was his own station's helicopter that had gone down.

The Moment Confirmation Arrived

Colleen Williams, a 40-year veteran of NBC Los Angeles and one of the city's most familiar broadcasting voices, delivered the confirmation on air hours later, her composure visibly cracking under the weight of the news. Hands clasped together, she spoke haltingly, clearly fighting back tears.

"We've been piecing it together here. We knew it was a news chopper, we knew we'd lost contact with our people out there, and we've just received the confirmation that, in fact, NewsChopper4 went down just before 7 o'clock tonight in Chatsworth," Williams told viewers. "We are going to take a couple of minutes to think about that, to process and to regroup."

A City's Leadership Responds

Kovacik, meanwhile, was seen sobbing and wiping away tears from inside a Los Angeles Police Department vehicle, yet he continued covering the rapidly evolving situation, kneeling behind police tape as Mayor Karen Bass and other officials held an evening news conference addressing both accidents.

"This is a very, very, very tragic day in Los Angeles," Bass said. The news conference itself was brief and somber, with reporters from competing outlets largely staying silent, offering the mayor just a single question. Bass noted that in moments like these, Los Angeles residents tend to do what they do best: "come together."

A Hug That Said More Than Words

When the news conference ended, Bass walked over to Kovacik and embraced him in a long hug. Political officials and first responders offered their condolences directly to him, while Kovacik, in turn, thanked firefighters for their rapid response and every effort made to help Moreno and Marciniw — a brief, human moment amid the chaos of live coverage.

The Cause Remains a Mystery

As of Wednesday, the cause of the crash remained unknown, leaving investigators — and a grieving newsroom — waiting for answers.

A Newsroom That Functions Like a Family

Jeff Wald, a former news director at rival station KTLA, explained why Tuesday's accident hit the city's media community so profoundly, pointing to the almost familial bonds that form inside local newsrooms. "What happens in this business is you wind up spending holidays, weekends, late night and early mornings with these people, your colleagues. They become your second family," he said in a phone interview. He added a personal admission: "Whenever I would hire somebody for these types of helicopter jobs, I worried about their safety."

Rival Stations Offer Their Own Tributes

The grief extended well beyond NBC's own walls. Frank Buckley, an anchor at KTLA, paid tribute on X to "our friends at NBCLA on a painful evening," writing that "the helicopter pilots and crews at all of our stations are vital members of our teams who are dedicated to informing the public and this is a terrible loss."

Elex Michaelson, a CNN anchor who previously co-hosted the evening news broadcast on KTTV, described helicopters as "essential to covering the biggest stories in the vast news market of Southern California" — a fitting tribute, given that news helicopters were actually pioneered in Los Angeles back in the late 1950s. Michaelson added a personal note: "I interned at NBC4 for years in college. Their team is filled with extraordinary people and great journalists. My heart breaks for their team and the loved ones of everyone who lost their lives."

Echoes of a Tragedy From Decades Past

Tuesday's crash carries a haunting historical parallel. It occurred 49 years after a Bell 206 news helicopter piloted by KNBC's Francis Gary Powers — a former U.S. Air Force officer and CIA employee — crashed near the Encino neighborhood, killing him and cameraman George Spears. That earlier crash happened as the pair were returning from covering a wildfire in Santa Barbara, when their helicopter ran out of fuel and went down.

A Colleague Reflects Mid-Broadcast

Desmond Shaw, a helicopter news reporter for the CBS LA station, appeared on air Tuesday night from inside his own chopper, reflecting on recent personal losses, including the deaths of his parents. He said that grief felt "compounded" by news that the city itself had now been struck by what he called "a double tragedy."

"The poor people that were caught in that bus crash today, I don't want them to be forgotten either," Shaw said, refusing to let one tragedy overshadow the other.

A Painful Reminder of an Old Rule

Shaw closed his remarks by invoking one of journalism's most basic, almost sacred principles — one that Tuesday's events had violently upended. "We're always saying, out of safety: cover the news, don't be the news," he said. "Unfortunately, gut-wrenchingly, they were part of the news tonight."

For a city whose skies have long been filled with the steady hum of news helicopters, Tuesday's crash was a stark reminder that behind every aerial shot of a chase or a fire, there are real people risking real danger — people whose second family, this week, is left mourning two of its own.
