“NEARING COMPLETION” — But The War Goes On

WHAT MATTERS NOW

  1. President Trump delivered his first prime-time address on the Iran war — 33 days after it began.
  2. He says victory is close. The missiles, the drones, and the gas prices say otherwise.
  3. The gap between the narrative and the reality may be the most consequential story in America right now.

Trump Addresses the Nation on Operation Epic Fury as Iran Conflict Enters Week Five

[USA HERALD] — On the same night four American astronauts lifted off toward the Moon, President Donald Trump walked to a podium at the White House and addressed a nation that is increasingly uneasy about a war it did not vote for.

In a roughly 20-minute speech, Trump announced that the administration's goals in Iran have nearly all been achieved and that the war is "nearing completion." It was his first formal address about the conflict since the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran more than a month ago. NPR

The message was clear: we are winning. We are almost done.

But the full picture is more complicated.

WHAT TRUMP SAID

The president declared that U.S. armed forces have delivered what he called "swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield" over the past four weeks. He said the war's core strategic objectives are "nearing completion," and pledged to strike Iran "extremely hard" over the next two to three weeks. CBS News

He also issued a direct warning: if no deal is reached, the U.S. has its eyes on key targets — and could hit Iranian electric generating plants "very hard and probably simultaneously," while also threatening Iranian oil industry sites. CBS News

Trump also denied that the war is about oil. "We're now totally independent of the Middle East, and yet we are there to help," he said. CNBC

He opened the address with a nod to the Artemis II launch before pivoting to the conflict — a moment of triumph layered over a moment of tension.

WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY

The ground-level reality of Operation Epic Fury is harder to spin.

Gas prices at the pump have surged more than 30% since the war began on February 28, topping $4 a gallon on average — their highest level since 2022 — as Iran has maintained a stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates roughly one-fifth of global oil supply. ABC News

Thirteen U.S. service members have been killed, and 348 U.S. troops have been wounded since the conflict began, according to the Pentagon. ABC News

At least 3,519 people in Iran have been killed due to U.S.-Israeli strikes since the war began, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. ABC News

More than 1,300 people in Lebanon have been killed in about four weeks of Israeli attacks, and more than a million have been displaced by the fighting and Israel's broad evacuation warnings. NPR

Oil prices jumped almost 4% as traders assessed the president's speech — widely interpreted as a signal that the war will not end quickly. The Washington Post

THE POLITICAL FAULT LINES

With rising gas prices sapping public support for the war, Trump sought to frame the conflict as a success. But multiple polls have shown that a majority of Americans disapprove of the conflict. NPR

The war has also caused divides among members of the president's own political base, as some supporters grapple with how to reconcile the conflict with Trump's past pledges to avoid foreign interventions. NPR

THE NATO DIMENSION

The war has further frayed U.S. relations with its NATO allies. In an interview published Wednesday, Trump said he is considering pulling out of NATO because those nations did not join the war in Iran. NPR

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer said 35 countries have signed a statement committing to work together on restoring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper set to lead a conference on the issue. CBS News

IRAN'S RESPONSE

Tehran is not standing down, though realistically, their ability to fight has been significantly depleted.

However, the United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Defense reported that its air defenses intercepted five ballistic missiles and 35 drones launched by Iran on Wednesday alone. Since the start of hostilities, UAE air defenses have intercepted 438 ballistic missiles, 19 cruise missiles, and more than 2,000 drones. CBS News

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi stated bluntly: "We do not have any faith that negotiations with the U.S. will yield any results. The trust level is at zero." ABC News

THE HARD TRUTH

A president declaring a war "nearing completion" while simultaneously vowing two to three more weeks of intensified strikes is a contradiction the American public is being asked to absorb in real time.

The legal, economic, and human costs of this conflict are compounding by the day — and the line between strategic progress and open-ended escalation is growing harder to define.
