A powerful nor’easter is battering the East Coast, leaving tens of thousands without electricity in New Jersey and New York while flooding roads and threatening coastal communities from New England to Delaware. The rapidly strengthening storm is bringing heavy rain, powerful winds, high surf and dangerous coastal flooding, with officials warning residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible extended power outages.

Nearly 30,000 New Jersey customers were without power early Saturday, with significant outages reported in Cumberland, Monmouth and Ocean counties. About 22,000 customers in New York were also without electricity, including thousands in Suffolk County, Nassau County and Queens.

The storm has prompted emergency declarations in parts of New York and New Jersey as forecasters warn that conditions could deteriorate further.

What Is a Nor’easter?

A nor’easter is a powerful storm that develops along or near the East Coast of North America and typically produces strong winds from the northeast. These storms can bring heavy precipitation, coastal flooding, beach erosion, high surf and significant inland impacts.

Nor’easters are not simply defined by snow. Depending on the season and atmospheric conditions, they can produce rain, snow, sleet or a mixture of precipitation. The September storm is primarily a rain and wind event, with coastal flooding among the principal threats.

The name comes from the direction of the strongest winds: northeast. The storms commonly affect areas stretching from the Mid-Atlantic through New England.

What Causes a Nor’easter?

Nor’easters generally form when a low-pressure system develops or intensifies along the East Coast, where it can draw energy from the temperature contrast between relatively warm ocean water and cooler air over land.

As the storm strengthens, the pressure difference between the center of the storm and surrounding areas can produce increasingly powerful winds. The storm can also push ocean water toward the coastline, producing storm surge and coastal flooding.

The shape of the coastline and the orientation of bays, inlets and rivers can make certain locations particularly vulnerable. High tides can compound the problem by leaving less room for storm-driven water.

This weekend's storm is arriving with another important factor: a harvest moon and elevated tides. Those conditions can contribute to coastal flooding when combined with strong onshore winds and high surf.

New Jersey Coast Faces Major Flooding Threat

New Jersey has already seen significant coastal flooding as water moved into streets in communities including Surf City. High surf has also been reported along portions of the Jersey Shore.

Manasquan issued a voluntary evacuation warning as forecasts called for coastal high tides several feet above normal. Mayor Mike Mangan warned residents to expect substantial amounts of water to remain in streets for an extended period.

Officials are particularly concerned about roads near the coastline, where seawater can quickly make normal routes impassable.

The National Weather Service placed portions of the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coast under coastal flood warnings. Parts of Connecticut, Long Island and New York City were also under coastal flood alerts.

Nor'easter Hits Northeast Dangerous Conditions Result

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City and Westchester County ahead of the storm.

“We’re expecting dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and potential power outages through the weekend,” Hochul said while urging residents to take the storm seriously and avoid unnecessary travel.

New York City was forecast to receive between two and three inches of rain, while wind gusts could create additional hazards for drivers, pedestrians and utility workers.

The combination of saturated ground and strong winds also increases the risk of falling trees and additional electrical outages.

Flights, Events and Travel Disrupted

The storm has already affected transportation and entertainment throughout the Northeast.

Nearly 180 flights had been canceled at Boston Logan, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard airports by Saturday morning, according to FlightAware.

Several concerts and sporting events were also canceled or postponed. The 2026 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park was canceled because of the storm, while the All Things Go Festival at Forest Hills Stadium was also scrapped.

Ed Sheeran canceled two scheduled performances at Gillette Stadium because of the weather.

The disruptions demonstrate how a major coastal storm can affect far more than communities immediately adjacent to the ocean. Airports, highways, public transportation systems, entertainment venues and businesses can all be affected by strong winds, flooding and heavy rain.

Emergency Crews Prepare for the Storm

Authorities across the region have been preparing emergency personnel and equipment ahead of the storm's strongest conditions.

New York officials called for specialized crews, high-axle vehicles and swift-water rescue teams to be available. Connecticut activated its Emergency Operations Center, while New Jersey officials prepared for flooding and power outages.

Utility companies have also staged crews ahead of the expected damage.

The primary concerns include flooding, falling trees, dangerous surf, beach erosion, downed power lines and hazardous driving conditions.

Residents in vulnerable coastal areas have been urged to follow evacuation and emergency instructions and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
