A fresh wave of UFO intrigue is sweeping through national security circles after more than 300 pages of UAP documents tied to the National Security Agency were made public. The files, released through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, reopen long-standing questions about how seriously the U.S. government has treated unidentified aerial phenomena and what may still remain hidden behind decades of classification.

Massive FOIA Release From Disclosure Foundation

The Disclosure Foundation has released more than 300 pages of UAP documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the National Security Agency.

While the documents do not prove every sighting recorded was anomalous or that any UAPs are connected to nonhuman intelligence, they do demonstrate the seriousness with which the sightings were treated by the U.S. government.

The release comes after the Pentagon created a page for UAP documents and released more than 100 files in an initial drop, following President Donald Trump’s promises to declassify UAP information.

Inside the 1980 Legal Battle That Still Echoes Today

The documents relate to a 1980 lawsuit, during which the NSA’s chief policy officer, Eugene Yeates, submitted affidavits in response to the request for documents.

That became what is known as the “Yeates Memo,” which was declassified in 2009, but the information referenced in the document had not been released.

The documents released by the foundation are the ones referenced in the memo and contain records from the agency tasked with analyzing signals intelligence for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes.

“Umbra” Classification Raises National Security Questions

The documents are marked with the codeword “Umbra,” which historically meant that the information would be considered especially damaging to national security if released improperly.

The foundation emphasized the importance of classification, noting that while the documents do not necessarily prove theories about UAPs, they do indicate that the government has treated at least some UAP sightings as extraordinarily sensitive.

Unexplained Sightings Still Unresolved

Some of the sightings include possible explanations, while others remain unexplained.

Among the unexplained incidents are sightings in which objects behave in ways that appear controlled, sightings in which the physical appearance of an object is inconsistent with possible explanations, sightings with multiple witnesses and incidents in which military aircraft were scrambled in response to an object.
