Oil Surges Past $105 After Trump Blasts Iran Proposal as ‘Totally Unacceptable’

Global oil prices jumped Monday and stock futures slipped as hopes for a U.S.-Iran peace breakthrough rapidly faded, sending fresh anxiety through energy markets already strained by war, soaring fuel costs and fears of a deeper Middle East crisis.

Investors reacted sharply after President Trump publicly rejected Iran’s latest proposal, raising new doubts about whether a temporary cease-fire agreement can be reached before the conflict causes even greater economic damage worldwide.

In a social media post Sunday, Trump declared Iran’s latest offer was “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” He did not provide details about the proposal or explain what specifically led to the breakdown.

Tehran, meanwhile, has said the two countries had been working toward a short-term agreement that would pause fighting for another 30 days and end Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil and gas shipping routes.

The failure to secure a deal immediately rattled markets.

Oil Prices Spike as Traders Brace for More Turmoil

The price of Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, surged more than 3 percent Monday, climbing to $105 a barrel.

West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark, jumped more than 4 percent, trading above $99 a barrel.

The renewed surge reflects growing fears that prolonged instability in the Persian Gulf could disrupt global energy supplies, tighten markets further and push fuel costs even higher for consumers already struggling with inflation.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important shipping lanes in the world, handling a massive share of global oil and natural gas exports. Any continued disruption there threatens to ripple across economies worldwide.

Stocks Slip as Markets Turn Cautious

Stock futures also edged lower as investors weighed the rising geopolitical risks.

Futures tied to the S&P 500 pointed to a decline of about 0.1 percent ahead of Monday trading in the United States.

Markets across Asia delivered mixed reactions.

South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI Index surged more than 4 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 dipped less than 1 percent as traders assessed the potential fallout from escalating tensions and higher energy costs.

European markets showed little movement.

The Stoxx 600, which tracks many of Europe’s largest companies, remained flat alongside Germany’s DAX index.

Drivers Still Paying Painfully High Gas Prices

Even as crude prices surged, gasoline prices in the United States held relatively steady Monday.

According to the AAA motor club, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at $4.52.

Prices have eased slightly since Friday, but Americans are still paying roughly 52 percent more per gallon than they were before the war began.

Analysts note that gasoline prices typically lag behind crude oil swings by several days, meaning drivers could soon feel the impact of the latest oil spike at the pump.

Diesel prices also remained elevated.

The average cost of diesel fuel fell by a penny Monday to $5.64 per gallon, though prices are still up 50 percent since the conflict started.

Trump Administration Signals Possible Gas Tax Pause

With fuel prices remaining politically and economically sensitive, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday that the Trump administration would consider pausing the federal gas tax.

The federal tax currently accounts for 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline.

Any temporary suspension could offer drivers modest relief, though analysts warn it may do little to offset the broader impact of rising crude prices if Middle East tensions continue escalating.

Middle East Conflict Expands Beyond Iran

The fighting has triggered growing instability across the region, with economic, military and political consequences spreading far beyond Iran itself.

“Mass Layoffs in Iran”

Iran was already under severe economic strain before widespread instability erupted in 2026. A government-imposed internet shutdown has now crippled entire sectors of the economy, deepening financial pain for businesses and workers.

“Strikes in Lebanon”

Israel launched deadly strikes in Lebanon as clashes with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, intensified despite a U.S.-mediated cease-fire effort.

“Caspian Sea Gains Strategic Importance”

The Caspian Sea has taken on growing strategic significance, with Russia shipping military and commercial goods aimed at strengthening Tehran’s ability to withstand the U.S. assault.

“New Sanctions Target Iran’s Supply Chains”

The United States announced a wave of new sanctions targeting people and companies in China and Hong Kong accused of helping the Iranian military gain access to critical supplies.

“United Arab Emirates Deepens Alliances”

The United Arab Emirates has strengthened its partnerships with Israel and the United States after enduring repeated Iranian attacks during the war.

As tensions rise and diplomacy stalls, investors, governments and consumers worldwide are increasingly bracing for the possibility that the conflict could trigger a prolonged energy crisis with global economic consequences.
