Oklahoma school principal tackles gunman

A potential school shooting in Oklahoma unraveled in a matter of seconds, as Oklahoma school principal tackles gunman became more than a headline — it became a life-saving reality.

Authorities say Kirk Moore, principal of Pauls Valley High School, charged head-on at an armed former student and disarmed him, stopping what investigators believe could have been a devastating attack. The confrontation, captured on surveillance video, unfolded like a lightning strike — sudden, violent, and decisive.

A confrontation that changed everything

Moore was shot in the leg during the struggle but continued to wrestle the suspect to the ground, demonstrating what officials described as extraordinary courage under fire.

The attacker, identified as Victor Lee Hawkins, 20, allegedly carried two semi-automatic handguns and fired multiple shots inside the school. No one else was injured.

Law enforcement officials in Garvin County, roughly 60 miles south of Oklahoma City, said Moore’s rapid response likely saved lives.

“It doesn’t surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing,” said Don May. “There’s not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids’ lives.”

Moments of chaos inside the school

According to investigators, the incident began shortly before 2:20 p.m. on April 7. About 20 minutes earlier, Hawkins allegedly took two firearms from his father’s home and drove to the campus with a deadly plan.

An arrest affidavit filed by Meric Mussett of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation states that Hawkins intended to kill students and staff before taking his own life.

Inside the school lobby, Hawkins reportedly pointed a handgun at a female student and pulled the trigger — but the weapon malfunctioned. He then moved toward another student in the foyer.

That’s when Moore emerged from his office and charged.

Like a shield thrown into the path of danger, the principal tackled Hawkins, with another staff member rushing in to assist. Together, they subdued and disarmed the suspect.

A chilling motive and averted disaster

Investigators say Hawkins expressed a disturbing fixation on the Columbine High School massacre, telling authorities he wanted to carry out a similar attack.

The 1999 tragedy in Colorado left 12 students and one teacher dead before the perpetrators took their own lives.

According to the affidavit, Hawkins also harbored personal animosity toward Moore and allegedly targeted the school with him in mind.

He now faces multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill, feloniously pointing a firearm, and carrying a weapon into a public assembly. Held at the Garvin County detention center, Hawkins is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 8.

Training, instinct, and a community’s gratitude

Pauls Valley High School had long prepared for such a moment, implementing safety protocols and conducting training exercises designed to respond to intruders.

A statement on the school’s website emphasized that ensuring student safety has remained a top priority, with years of planning behind their emergency readiness.

Former students say Moore’s actions came as no surprise.

“If some student was to get harmed, he would definitely take a bullet for him,” said Spencer Flinn, reflecting a sentiment echoed across the community.

In a statement, Moore said he was overwhelmed by support following the incident and credited both training and instinct.

“Like so many educators, we prepare for these events,” he said. “I’m grateful my instincts and training — and God’s hand — were there.”

Moore confirmed he is recovering from his injuries and hopes to return to work soon, his actions already etched into the community’s memory as a moment when courage outran catastrophe.
