PAL-V Liberty Flying Cars

The PAL-V Liberty flying car is the world’s first production-legal gyroplane car, now available for sale. The Dutch company PAL-V International has designed and developed this innovative vehicle, combining the freedom of flight with road capabilities. First deliveries were expected by the end of 2018, marking a milestone in personal aviation.

Performance and Capabilities

The PAL-V Liberty operates as both a three-wheeled gyrocopter in the air and a compact vehicle on the road.

  • Flight Mode: The Liberty can climb to a maximum altitude of 3,500 meters. Its 197hp flying engine enables a top airspeed of 112 mph (180 kph).
  • Drive Mode: The vehicle's 99hp road engine achieves a top speed of 100 mph (160 kph), with an acceleration of 0-62 mph (100 kph) in 9.0 seconds.

Pricing and Model Variants

The PAL-V Liberty is available in two versions:

  • Liberty Sport: Priced at $399,000 (€299,000), this base model offers essential flying car features.
  • Liberty Pioneer Edition: Limited to just 90 units, this premium model costs $599,000 (€499,000) and includes additional features.

Both versions come with introductory flight training and power heating. Prospective buyers must place a nonrefundable deposit of $10,000 for the Sport model and $25,000 for the Pioneer Edition. A $2,500 refundable deposit secures a spot on the waiting list.

Licensing and Training

Operating the PAL-V Liberty requires a gyroplane pilot’s license. According to PAL-V’s website:

“The PAL-V Liberty is a gyroplane, one of the easiest and above all, safest ways to fly. At PAL-V, we designed the Liberty to comply with the highest aviation standards in the world. On top of that, the gyroplane offers a low barrier to entry for non-pilots to enter the world of aviation.”

Development Timeline

The development of the PAL-V Liberty has been a long journey:

  • 2008: Vehicle construction begins.
  • 2009: First prototype, Prototype X1, successfully tested on the road.
  • 2010: Development of the second prototype, PAL-V ONE.
  • 2012: First PAL-V flight successfully carried out.
  • 2013: Commercial design of the PAL-V Liberty completed.
  • 2018: Official unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Technology and Safety

PAL-V emphasizes cutting-edge technology and strict aviation safety standards. The company partners with leading manufacturers to ensure state-of-the-art flight components, making the Liberty a reliable and luxurious flying car.

“At PAL-V, we aim for excellence. Therefore, we only use established, state-of-the-art technology in our flight components. We have partnered with some of the leading manufacturers in the world to guarantee a flying car that meets the highest aviation standards.”
