Paramount President PR $150M Lawsuit Sparks Explosive Allegations

Paramount President PR $150M

A lawsuit demanding $150 million has erupted against the president of a major Hollywood studio division, pulling back the curtain on alleged backchannel communications, media maneuvering and promises tied to a television project.

The case, now unfolding in court, centers on claims that high-stakes crisis communications and insider industry intelligence were exchanged for a deal that never materialized.

Crisis PR Dispute Lands in Court

Jeff Shell, president of Paramount Skydance, was sued Monday by a man who claims he is owed $150 million for crisis communications services — and for Shell’s alleged refusal to help produce a television series.

The plaintiff, R.J. Cipriani, alleges in the complaint that he maintained an 18-month relationship with Shell. During that time, Cipriani claims he warned the executive about upcoming news articles and provided advice on managing public relations storms.

The lawsuit also contends that Shell shared non-public corporate information about Paramount’s plans during their exchanges.

Alleged Oral Agreement Over TV Show

According to the complaint, Cipriani and Shell had an oral agreement: Shell would assist in producing a TV program titled “Star Serenade” in exchange for Cipriani’s crisis communications services.

The lawsuit includes alleged remarks attributed to Shell, including criticism of Paramount’s planned purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery.

“We’re paying way too much for Warner Bros.,” the suit quotes Shell as saying. “If we could just wait another year, we could get it a whole lot cheaper.”

Paramount Skydance has agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at $111 billion, one of the largest media mergers in recent years.

The lawsuit names Shell and his wife, Laura Shell, as defendants. Paramount itself is not named in the suit and declined to comment.

Dispute Over Media Influence

When Cipriani first threatened legal action in February, Shell’s attorney at the time, Patricia Glaser, dismissed the allegations as baseless.

“We were presented with a draft complaint riddled with clear errors of fact and law,” Glaser said then. “If he makes the mistake of filing it, we will strongly respond.”

Representatives for Shell did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.

Claim of Orchestrating Hollywood Reporter Article

The lawsuit asserts that Cipriani played a role in shaping a June 23, 2025 article published by The Hollywood Reporter about a dispute between Shell and “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The article examined tensions over “South Park” streaming rights negotiations with outside parties. According to the lawsuit, the story portrayed Parker and Stone as greedy and highlighted their accusations that Shell interfered in negotiations.

Cipriani claims he informed Shell of his role after the story appeared, writing:
“I’m the one that put the article out for you!!! … I didn’t want to tell you till it hit so you have plausible deniability!”

Shell allegedly replied: “Thank you RJ… I owe you dinner at least!”

The complaint argues that Cipriani’s involvement saved Paramount $1.5 billion in negotiations tied to the dispute.

“Despite this staggering benefit, Shell refused to compensate Plaintiff in any amount,” the lawsuit states.

Meeting Ends Without Deal

According to the complaint, Cipriani and Shell met Feb. 2 at a lawyer’s office in an attempt to settle the dispute.

During that meeting, the lawsuit alleges, Shell made clear he would not pay Cipriani and would not assist in producing “Star Serenade.”

The complaint also claims Shell voiced disdain for David Zaslav, saying Paramount would not retain him after the merger because executives considered him incompetent and overly eager to please Hollywood celebrities.

SEC Complaint and Insider Claims

The lawsuit further alleges that Cipriani acted as a whistleblower, reporting Shell to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the complaint, Shell disclosed non-public information about Paramount’s plan to acquire UFC streaming rights for more than $7 billion nearly a month before the information became public.

Cipriani claims the situation has left him suffering emotional distress and physical illness, blaming what he describes as a prolonged campaign of broken promises and exploitation.

Shell’s Career Under Scrutiny

Before joining Paramount, Shell served as chairman of RedBird Sports & Media beginning in February 2024. The firm’s parent, RedBird Capital Partners, backs Paramount’s Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition and invested in Skydance Media during its deal for Paramount Global.

Earlier in his career, Shell led NBCUniversal as chief executive. In April 2023, parent company Comcast fired him after an internal investigation found he had engaged in an “inappropriate” relationship with an NBCUniversal employee who had filed a complaint alleging sexual harassment and discrimination.

Now, with the Paramount President PR $150M lawsuit advancing, the courtroom may become the next stage where the entertainment industry’s behind-the-scenes power plays are examined under a bright legal spotlight.
