A growing war of words between Pope Leo and Donald Trump is spilling into a broader global warning, with the pontiff cautioning that modern democracies could slide into dangerous territory without strong moral foundations.

Just two days after Trump blasted the pope as "terrible" on social media, Leo issued a stark message Tuesday: democracy itself is at risk of being distorted into something far more dangerous.

In a letter addressed to participants at a Vatican meeting focused on power in democratic societies, Leo warned that the very structure of democracy can be undermined if it loses its ethical grounding.

"Lacking this foundation, (democracy) risks becoming either ⁠a majoritarian tyranny or a mask for the dominance of economic and technological elites," he said.

The message lands at a moment of rising global tension, where debates over political power, influence, and control are intensifying across continents.

Although the letter does not mention the United States or any specific country, its timing is impossible to ignore.

The Vatican released the text as Leo embarked on an ambitious 10-day tour across four African nations, signaling that his warning is meant for a global audience, not just one political leader.

Trump’s criticism came after the pope increasingly spoke out against the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, a position that has drawn both praise and backlash on the world stage.

"Power Is Not the End Goal"

In his letter, Leo reinforced a central teaching of the Catholic Church: power must serve people, not the other way around.

"This implies that the legitimacy of authority depends not on the accumulation of economic or technological strength, but on the wisdom and virtue ⁠with which it is exercised," he wrote.

The warning strikes at the heart of modern governance, where economic dominance and technological control often shape political outcomes.

"Temperance ... proves ⁠essential for the legitimate use of authority, for true temperance restrains inordinate self-exaltation and acts as a guardrail against the abuse of power," he said.
