Pope Leo XIV Delivers Powerful First Easter Plea For Peace As Wars Rage Across The Globe — ‘Let Those Who Have Weapons Lay Them Down’

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV stood before thousands of worshippers in a sun-drenched St. Peter's Square on Easter Sunday and delivered an urgent, emotional appeal for global peace — his first Easter message since ascending to the papacy last year and one that carried unmistakable weight as wars rage across multiple continents.

In his inaugural Urbi et Orbi address — the traditional Easter blessing delivered "to the city and to the world" — the pontiff directly challenged world leaders and combatants alike to abandon the path of violence.

"Let us abandon every desire for conflict, domination and power, and implore the Lord to grant his peace to a world ravaged by wars and marked by a hatred and indifference that make us feel powerless in the face of evil," Pope Leo said.

His most pointed remarks came in a passage that drew sustained applause from the crowd gathered among the flowers and spring bulbs that traditionally decorate the square for Easter celebrations.

"Let Those Who Have Weapons Lay Them Down"

Pope Leo did not single out any nation or conflict by name, but the timing of his remarks left little ambiguity about his intended audience. With the U.S.-Iran war intensifying, Israel's military operations expanding into Lebanon, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict grinding through its fourth year, the pontiff framed Easter itself as a repudiation of violence.

"The power of Easter is entirely nonviolent," he declared. "Let those who have weapons lay them down. Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace. Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue. Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them."

The message stood in stark contrast to the bellicose rhetoric that had dominated headlines just hours earlier, when President Trump issued a profanity-laden ultimatum to Iran on Truth Social, threatening to destroy the country's power plants and bridges if it did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday evening.

A Pope Navigating A World At War

Pope Leo XIV, who took office last year as the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church, has sought to position himself as a mediating voice in a period of extraordinary global tension. His Easter homily emphasized that the resurrection of Jesus Christ demonstrated that "nonviolence is true power over evil" — a theological argument with clear geopolitical implications.

The pontiff also used the occasion to announce a special prayer vigil for peace, to be held in St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday, April 11. The vigil is expected to draw delegations from Catholic communities around the world and will be broadcast globally.

Easter Celebrations Under The Shadow Of Conflict

This year's Easter observances carried particular significance in several conflict zones. Christians in Jerusalem, Gaza, and Tehran all held services under varying degrees of restriction and danger. In Bethlehem, where Easter celebrations are traditionally a major event, attendance was sharply reduced due to ongoing security concerns related to the regional conflict.

At the Vatican, security was visibly heightened compared to previous years, with Italian police and Vatican gendarmes deploying additional checkpoints around St. Peter's Square. Despite the increased security presence, the atmosphere remained one of reverence and cautious hope.

A Message For The Moment

Religious leaders from multiple faiths echoed Pope Leo's sentiments throughout the day. The Archbishop of Canterbury released a separate statement calling for "restraint and compassion" in all active conflicts, while the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Cairo issued a parallel call for dialogue.

Whether the pontiff's words will have any measurable impact on the trajectory of current conflicts remains to be seen. But for the millions who watched the Easter Mass from St. Peter's Square and around the world, the message was clear: the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics believes this is a moment that demands moral courage over military escalation.

Pope Leo XIV's special prayer vigil for peace is scheduled for April 11 at St. Peter's Basilica. USA Herald will provide coverage.
