Prichard Colon Death: Once-Unbeaten Boxer Dies at 33 After Decade in Shadow of Brain Injury

Prichard Colon never threw another punch after that October night in 2015. For nearly ten years, his body waged a quieter, crueler fight — one with no bell, no referee, and no way to win. On Thursday, that fight ended. He was 33.

Father Breaks the News

The confirmation came not from a boxing commission or a hospital statement, but from the person who knew him best: his father, Richard Colon. In a social media post, the elder Colon delivered the news in words heavy with grief and faith, writing that he was saddened to share that his son Prichard had left this world and had "gone to a better place."

No official cause of death has been made public.

A Prospect Built for Stardom

Before the injury that would define — and ultimately end — his life, Prichard Colon looked like a boxer sculpted for greatness. The Puerto Rican super welterweight climbed the ranks the way a rocket leaves a launchpad: fast, forceful, and hard to ignore.

He opened his career with 16 straight victories, 13 of them by knockout — a résumé that had promoters and fans alike whispering the word "champion" long before he ever fought for a title.

The Night Everything Changed

Then came Oct. 17, 2015, in Fairfax, Virginia. What was supposed to be another step up the ladder against Terrel Williams instead became the night Colon's career — and much of his future — was taken from him.

Mid-fight, Colon repeatedly complained about blows landing behind his head, the kind of strikes boxing calls "rabbit punches" — illegal hits that bypass the sport's protective rules precisely because of how dangerous they are. Think of it like a car crash where the airbag never deploys: the damage happens exactly where the body is least prepared to absorb it.

By the time Colon reached the locker room, his body gave out. He collapsed, was rushed into emergency surgery for bleeding on the brain, and then slipped into something far more prolonged and merciless than any 12-round bout: a coma that would last more than 200 days.

Living With the Damage

Colon survived, but the young man who emerged from that coma was not the same fighter who had entered the ring. The trauma left him with permanent, severe neurological damage — an injury so devastating it turned his name into a cautionary tale cited across the sport whenever the conversation turns to fighter safety and the hidden dangers of illegal punches.

For nearly a decade, Colon's story served as a grim reminder that boxing's dangers don't always end when the final bell rings. Sometimes, the real fight only begins after the crowd goes home.

A Legacy Beyond the Record Book

Colon's undefeated record — 16-0 — will forever carry an asterisk that no scoresheet can capture: a career cut short not by a better fighter, but by a rule broken in real time, with consequences that outlasted the fight itself by a decade.

His father's message closed with the kind of quiet resolve that only comes after years of hoping for a comeback that would never arrive. Prichard Colon is gone, but the questions his case raised about rabbit punches, ringside safety, and the true cost of the sport remain very much alive.
