Heather Matarazzo just admitted something most working actors won't say out loud. She's not broke by choice — she's stuck under a pay threshold that keeps climbing every single year. And she's far from the only one.

HOLLYWOOD - Heather Matarazzo built her career playing the girl standing just off to the side of the star — Lilly Moscovitz next to Anne Hathaway, Martha Meeks next to Neve Campbell. She's been working since she was a kid. And this week, she said flat out that none of that guarantees she'll have health insurance in January.

It started with someone else's crisis. Jack Haven, who plays Marcus on "Atypical," posted a video begging for work. Not backstage gossip, not a soft-focus Instagram caption — a direct plea. "I'm in a bit of an emergency situation," Haven said. They needed $4,000 by the end of the month or they'd miss the earnings cutoff for SAG-AFTRA health coverage starting in January. Haven said they'd take almost anything. Any set, any production, any job. They left an email address in the video for people to reach out.

Matarazzo saw the post and didn't scroll past it. She replied directly, and what she said matters more than a passing comment of support. "I am literally in the same boat right now," she wrote. "Lots of my fellow actors are." Then she added the detail that turns this from one actor's bad month into a structural problem: "I remember a time when we didn't have to earn a minimum to qualify for insurance."

That's the real story here. SAG-AFTRA's health plan isn't free for members just because they're in the union. You have to hit an earnings floor first. This year that number sat at $28,933. And it's not staying put — the threshold is set to climb roughly $900 every year through 2030. For someone booking steady studio work, that's manageable. For most actors, whose income looks nothing like a steady paycheck, it's a moving target that gets harder to hit as rent, gas and everything else gets more expensive too.

Think about what that means in practice. An actor can book a great role, do good work, get paid — and then spend the next eight months without a single offer through no fault of their own. Casting is slow. Productions get shelved. Budgets dry up. None of that is the actor's decision, but the insurance clock doesn't care. If the total doesn't clear the line by December, coverage lapses in January, no matter how good the year looked on a resume.

Matarazzo isn't a newcomer complaining about an industry she doesn't understand. She's been in front of a camera since she was six years old. "Welcome to the Dollhouse" put her on the map in 1995. She was in "The Devil's Advocate"two years later, then "Scream 3" in 2000, then two "Princess Diaries" films opposite Hathaway. More recently she's shown up in Netflix's "Wednesday" and the 2025 short "Paper Tiger." That's three decades of steady credits — and she's still saying, in plain language, that she might lose her health coverage over an earnings formula.

Haven, for what it's worth, said afterward they'd gotten an offer that would let them qualify for 2027. Matarazzo said she was glad to hear it. She didn't say the same relief had come her way yet.

What's notable is that neither actor framed this as a scandal or pointed a finger at a villain. They just said the math doesn't work for people whose income doesn't arrive on a predictable schedule — which, in acting, is almost everybody who isn't a household name. That's a quieter kind of story than a scandal, but it might be the more honest one: two working actors with real credits, saying the system that's supposed to protect them keeps raising the bar just out of reach.
