Progressive Democrat Analilia Mejia Scores Special Election Win in NJ House Race, Boosting Party Momentum Ahead of Midterms

A stunning political upset is already reshaping the New Jersey congressional landscape after progressive activist Analilia Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway in a closely watched special election in the 11th Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race just seven minutes after polls closed, signaling a decisive victory that energized Democrats and set the tone for a heated midterm season ahead.

The win gives Democrats an immediate foothold in a district that has become a political battleground, while also elevating a candidate whose campaign centered on some of the most divisive issues in national politics.

Early Victory Sparks Celebration in Montclair

Mejia’s supporters erupted in celebration inside a packed hall at the Montclair Art Museum on Thursday night as results came in rapidly and firmly in her favor. Many wore blue shirts reading “Defend our democracy,” underscoring the high-stakes political energy surrounding the race.

“In November, when I jumped into this race, the odds were stacked against us. But you know — we did the impossible, and we won,”

Mejia told the crowd, marking a triumphant moment that reflected both the speed and scale of her victory.

Seat Flipped Into Democratic Hands After Sherrill’s Exit

Mejia will serve in the seat vacated by Gov. Mikie Sherrill after Sherrill won the governorship in November, holding the position until Jan. 3, 2027. The quick AP call underscored the decisive nature of the result, transforming what was expected to be a competitive contest into an early Democratic win.

Progressive Platform and National Political Ties

A former head of the state’s Working Families Party and national political director for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, Mejia ran on an unapologetically progressive platform.

Her campaign focused on opposition to President Donald Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda, criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza which she characterized as a genocide, and calls for sweeping domestic reforms including universal health care and a higher minimum wage.

Primary Upset That Shocked Political Observers

Mejia’s path to victory was already marked by political disruption after she defeated 10 other Democrats in February’s special primary, including former Rep. Tom Malinowski, a result that surprised many analysts and reshaped expectations for the general election.

She is now set to make history as the first Latina to represent the 11th District in Congress, and only the second Latina to represent New Jersey in Washington, D.C.

Republican Challenger Concedes but Signals Rematch

Hathaway, a Randolph councilman, spent election night in a private gathering with family and close friends. In a statement, he congratulated Mejia while emphasizing the narrow nature of turnout-driven victories.

“I still believe the broader electorate in NJ-11 is looking for balanced, pragmatic leadership, not the kind of far-left policies embraced by Ms. Mejia. That conversation is not over,” he said. “I’ve said from the beginning that we’re running through the tape, and I mean it. I’m looking forward to the rematch in November, when more voices will be heard and the full electorate will have its say.”

Hathaway also campaigned aggressively against Mejia, labeling her a dangerous socialist and antisemite over her comments regarding Israel and Gaza. He positioned himself as a moderate Republican, distancing himself from President Donald Trump’s policies while pledging not to act as a rubber stamp for his party.

Independent candidate Alan Bond also appeared on the ballot and finished a distant third.

District History and Political Shifts

The 11th Congressional District, which includes parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, was once a Republican stronghold before shifting blue in recent years. Gov. Mikie Sherrill flipped the seat in 2018, and subsequent redistricting has made it increasingly difficult for Republicans to reclaim it.

Victory Speech Emphasizes Unity and Gratitude

Mejia used her victory speech to thank supporters and political allies, including former rivals who backed her campaign after the primary.

“No one makes it alone. No one. I am only here because of all of you,” she said.

Her supporters included state Democratic Party chairman Leroy Jones and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, both of whom praised her win as the beginning of continued political momentum.

“This moment is a good feeling tonight, but the work begins tomorrow. She is now the incumbent congressperson of the 11th Congressiona District, and we will continue to march with her,” Jones said.

Bilingual Celebration and Grassroots Energy

The victory event featured speakers addressing the crowd in both Spanish and English, with chants of “Si, se puede” — “yes, we can” — breaking out multiple times throughout the night.

Mejia also spoke in Spanish, saying she wanted to speak so her mother could understand her.

“She helped me and my sister see that we could, in fact, have a rightful place not only in this country, not only in this state, but amongst community. That we could be different, but in fact, we share so much,” she said.

Eyes Already Turn Toward November Rematch

Despite the decisive special election win, the political battle is far from over. Mejia is facing three Democrats in June’s regular primary, while Hathaway remains unopposed on the Republican side for the upcoming election for the full two-year term beginning in January.

“Don’t forget, in eight weeks we got to do it again,” Mejia said Thursday.
