A wave of online conspiracy theories is spiraling around the deaths and disappearances of at least 10 people connected to sensitive U.S. research, pulling grieving families into a storm of speculation they say is deeply painful, misleading and, in some cases, “disgusting.” While federal investigators and online sleuths continue to scrutinize the cases, relatives insist the reality is far more grounded and far less sensational.

“DISGUSTING SPECULATION SPREADS ONLINE”

Carl Grillmair, an astronomer linked to the California Institute of Technology’s IPAC science and data center, has become one of the most frequently cited names in the viral “missing scientists” narrative. But his widow says the theories distort a tragic and straightforward crime.

“I think it's absolute nonsense,” says Louise Grillmair. “I mean, there's the facts, and they're out there.”

Her husband, 67-year-old Carl Grillmair, was fatally shot in February at their home in Llano, California. Authorities have charged a 29-year-old local man, Freddy Snyder, with murder and burglary. He is scheduled for arraignment next week.

Despite the arrest, Grillmair’s case has been pulled into broader online claims linking roughly 10 individuals tied to science, defense, and research roles.

“MISSING SCIENTISTS” THEORY SPREADS DESPITE FACTS

The group often labeled online as “missing scientists” is far more diverse than social media posts suggest. It includes an administrative assistant, an Air Force general, an engineer, and a custodian, with backgrounds ranging from exoplanet research to pharmaceuticals.

The clustering of unrelated cases has drawn attention from online sleuths and even prompted announcements of review efforts from the U.S. House Oversight Committee and the FBI.

But families and researchers say the narrative collapses under basic scrutiny.

Science writer and investigator Mick West pushed back on the speculation in an April 16 post on Substack, citing workforce size and statistical expectations.

“The US Top Secret-cleared aerospace and nuclear workforce is ~700,000 people,” he wrote. “Ordinary mortality over 22 months predicts ~4,000 deaths, ~70 homicides, and ~180 suicides. The list has 10 … The deaths are real. The families' grief is real. The pattern is not.”

GRILLMAIR FAMILY SAYS REVENGE, NOT CONSPIRACY

Louise Grillmair believes her husband’s death stemmed from a local conflict that escalated over time, not anything tied to his scientific work.

She says a man had previously entered their property with a rifle under the claim of coyote hunting. Months later, the same individual allegedly returned with a baseball bat before coming back again on February 16, when he is accused of fatally shooting her husband.

“We believe [he] came for revenge, thinking Carl was the one that called 911,” she says.

She believes tensions escalated after a neighbor reported disruptive behavior, even though her husband did not make the call.

“HE WOULD LAUGH AT THESE THEORIES”

Louise Grillmair says her husband would have dismissed the conspiracy claims entirely.

“Carl would laugh,” she says, referring to the online theories. She adds, “He would probably talk statistically to squelch conspiracies.”

She also described him as a deeply kind person whose reputation, she believes, is being overshadowed.

“Probably the nicest guy that walked the face of the Earth,” she says.

AIR FORCE GENERAL CASE ALSO FUELING ONLINE CLAIMS

Among the most widely discussed cases is retired Air Force Gen. William Neil McCasland, who disappeared from his New Mexico home on February 27.

His wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, has publicly pushed back on misinformation circulating online and addressed key details in a Facebook post.

She wrote that although her husband once had access to classified programs during his military career, he retired nearly 13 years ago and held only routine clearances afterward.

“It seems quite unlikely that he was taken to extract very dated secrets from him,” she wrote.

She also referenced his work with Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge’s To The Stars organization, which explores UFO-related topics, while rejecting claims of hidden knowledge about extraterrestrial materials.

“At this point with absolutely no sign of him, maybe the best hypothesis is that aliens beamed him up to the mothership,” she wrote. “However, no sightings of a mothership hovering above the Sandia Mountains have been reported.”

In her 911 call, she also noted concerns about his mental and physical health, including anxiety, memory issues, and lack of sleep.

OTHER CASES ADD TO VIRAL MISINFORMATION

Eight months before McCasland’s disappearance, another case emerged in New Mexico involving Melissa Casias, an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, who vanished from Taos.

Her family has indicated publicly that they believe she left on her own, but online speculation has continued regardless.

“It’s been the hardest six weeks of our life with out you,” her husband Mark Casias wrote on Facebook in August 2025. “Sierra and I are starting to worry more every day about you, we believe you are ok but can't understand why you haven't reached out.”

Other cases circulating online include situations with clear explanations. MIT physicist Nuno Loureiro was murdered by a former classmate, who later confessed on video. Another researcher was found dead in a lake after a period of intense personal tragedy, including the loss of both parents within hours. A separate scientist died at age 59 from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a coroner’s report.

FAMILIES SAY SPECULATION IS DEEPENING THEIR PAIN

Relatives say the conspiracy wave has made already devastating losses even harder to endure. Some families declined interviews, calling the speculation harmful and “terrible.”

For Louise Grillmair, the online narratives are not just wrong, they are painful distortions of a life she says should be remembered for something else entirely.

She met her husband in an astrophysics class and remembers a man defined by generosity and integrity.

“He helped everyone that needed help,” she says. She recalled that even after serious car accidents, he refused to sue others involved.

His obituary highlighted his passions outside academia, describing him as an avid pilot who flew and maintained small aircraft and gliders, and someone who enjoyed outdoor work, including tractors, construction, and maintaining a home observatory.

“Friends and associates recall that he loved the outdoors, driving tractors, and doing repairs and other construction work on his house, where he also kept a small observatory with several telescopes.”

For his widow, the priority is simple: separate fact from fiction before misinformation overshadows real lives.

“I have the facts,” she says.
