The Reseda Middle School student's death has sent shockwaves through Los Angeles, after a 12-year-old girl died days following an alleged bullying incident inside her school hallway.

Family members say the tragedy began 10 days earlier, when another student hurled a metal water bottle at her head during an altercation at Reseda High School, a charter campus serving grades 6 through 12.

Now, the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the girl’s death as a homicide.

A Hallway Incident, Then a Sudden Collapse

The girl’s mother, Elma Chuquipa, told KTLA that her daughter, Khimberly, was attacked by another 12-year-old student who threw the metal bottle at her head in a school corridor.

Khimberly was taken to an emergency room following the incident and later discharged, according to her family. But in the days that followed, her condition worsened. She suddenly collapsed and was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain hemorrhage.

She later died from her injuries.

Police have not released additional details about the investigation or potential charges.

Community Grief Turns to Protest

On Friday night, grief spilled onto the streets outside the school. Mourners gathered in a candlelight protest, leaving flowers at the gates and demanding accountability. The atmosphere was heavy — part vigil, part plea for justice.

The family has created a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical bills and funeral costs. By Friday evening, more than $13,000 had been raised.

“As the baby of our family, she brought a special light and joy into our lives,” the fundraiser states. It described a girl who loved music, volleyball, walks with her two dogs and who carried “many dreams for the future.”

“Tragically, Khimberly’s life was cut short following a bullying incident at school,” the page reads.

District Responds, Counseling Offered

In a statement, the Los Angeles Unified School District expressed sorrow over the student’s death.

“The Los Angeles Unified School District is deeply saddened by the death of a Reseda High School student,” the district said. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community.”

Citing respect for the family and student confidentiality, officials declined to release further details. The district said it is cooperating with law enforcement and has made counseling services and additional support resources available on campus.

“The District takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously,” the statement added.

As investigators continue their work, the Reseda Middle School student's death has ignited broader questions about bullying, campus safety and whether warning signs were missed. For one family, the questions are no longer abstract — they are heartbreakingly personal.
