Retirement Rises as Older Americans Leave the Workforce

Retirement is becoming an increasingly attractive option for older Americans as years of stock market gains have boosted household wealth and given some workers greater confidence that they can afford to stop working.

The labor force participation rate for Americans age 55 and older fell to 36.9% in July 2026, down from 40.3% in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the U.S. economy.

The decline has attracted attention from economists because participation among older workers has been one of the slower parts of the labor market to recover. The Bureau of Labor Statistics generally defines older workers as those age 55 and older.

Bank of America Securities economist Aditya Bhave said the decline may be connected, at least in part, to the substantial increase in stock market wealth since the pandemic.

Bhave pointed to a gain of more than 35% in the S&P 500 over the previous two years as a potential factor encouraging some older Americans to leave the workforce. He cautioned, however, that the stock market is not necessarily the only explanation for the decline in participation.

The broader trend is important because millions of Americans in their late 50s, 60s and 70s remain capable of working and, in many cases, continue to have valuable experience and skills. When those workers retire, the decision affects not only their household finances but also the supply of available workers across the U.S. economy.

Stock Market Gains Can Change Retirement Decisions

For Americans approaching retirement, the size of an investment portfolio can have a major influence on when they decide to stop working.

A worker who watched a retirement account grow substantially over several years may feel less pressure to remain employed. A larger portfolio can provide a greater financial cushion for future expenses, particularly for people who also have Social Security, pensions or other sources of income.

Bhave described the effect as a form of increased financial confidence. Even investors who are concerned about a future market decline may conclude that their accumulated gains provide enough room to withstand a moderate downturn.

That does not mean every older American is retiring because of the stock market. Some workers leave employment because of health concerns, caregiving responsibilities, layoffs, changes in workplace conditions or personal decisions. Others may have retired during the pandemic and never returned.

The current data therefore should not be interpreted as proof that rising stocks directly caused older Americans to retire. Rather, the market's performance appears to be one factor that may make retirement financially feasible for some households.

The S&P 500 has continued to post strong returns. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the index had a one-year price return of about 20.9% as of June 30, 2026, while its year-to-date price return was 9.55% at that point.

The Wealth Effect Reaches Retirement Accounts

Financial advisers who work with older clients say they are seeing the same phenomenon.

Cary Carbonaro, a certified financial planner and author of "Women and Wealth," said strong market performance has given some clients more options when deciding whether to retire. Tyson Sprick, a financial planner in Kansas, similarly said some clients have gained enough confidence from their investment balances to move ahead with retirement plans.

The advisers also emphasized the uncertainty involved.

Strong investment returns cannot be assumed to continue indefinitely. A major stock market decline could reduce retirement savings, particularly for people who have recently stopped working and have begun withdrawing money from their portfolios.

Retirement Timing and the Stock Market

That makes the timing of retirement particularly important. Someone retiring after several years of exceptional market performance could face a different financial environment than someone who retires following a prolonged market downturn.

For that reason, financial planners often examine retirement plans under multiple market scenarios rather than assuming recent returns will continue.

401(k) Balances Are Also Rising

The improved financial position of many retirement savers is reflected in Bank of America's 2026 Workplace Benefits Report.

According to the report, the average 401(k) balance reached $124,250 in the second quarter of 2026, a 15% increase from the previous year. About two-thirds of employees surveyed said they were confident their savings were on track to support retirement at the age and lifestyle they want.

Bank of America separately reported that overall employee financial well-being reached a four-year high. At the same time, workers continued to identify the economy, inflation and the cost of living as significant financial concerns.

Those competing forces help explain the complicated retirement picture.

Some older workers have benefited from higher investment balances and rising home values, while others continue to struggle with inflation, housing costs, health care expenses and insufficient savings. The gains therefore have not been distributed evenly across the population.

Older Americans Retirement Impacts the Economy

The retirement of older workers can have consequences beyond individual households.

When experienced workers leave the labor force, employers may have a smaller pool of available workers. That can be particularly significant in industries where older employees hold specialized knowledge or have accumulated decades of experience.

At the same time, retirees generally remain consumers. They continue spending money on housing, food, health care, travel, entertainment and other goods and services. Their spending can therefore remain an important component of economic activity even after they stop collecting a paycheck.

Retirement also changes the sources of household income. Instead of wages, retirees may rely on Social Security, pensions, investment withdrawals and other assets. The transition can alter both household spending patterns and the way economic growth is distributed.

The decline in participation among older Americans is consequently more than a labor-market statistic. It is part of a broader demographic and financial shift occurring as large numbers of Americans reach traditional retirement ages.

Issues With Retirement Savings

For workers with substantial retirement savings, the recent stock market surge may have accelerated a decision they were already considering. For those without enough assets, however, continued employment may remain necessary despite the strong performance of financial markets.

The central question for the U.S. economy is whether the current wave of older-worker departures represents a lasting structural change or a temporary response to unusually favorable financial conditions.

For now, the evidence suggests that rising wealth is giving at least some older Americans a greater ability to choose when they leave the workforce. But as financial advisers caution, retirement decisions still have to account for inflation, longevity, market volatility and the possibility that today's unusually strong investment returns will not last forever.
