Sally Ride: Legacy of America’s First Woman in Space and Her Hidden Truth

Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel to space, made history when she boarded the Challenger on June 18, 1983. But the trailblazing astronaut also lived a more private truth: she was a lesbian, a fact that remained unknown to the public until her death from cancer in 2012.

A new documentary titled Sally shines a light on Ride’s full legacy, reclaiming her identity and personal story amid a troubling political climate.

Sally Ride Had a Secret Life

Sally Ride’s sexual orientation was only publicly acknowledged in her obituary, which named her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy.

Now, Sally, a powerful National Geographic documentary debuting June 16 and streaming on Hulu and Disney+ the next day, offers an intimate portrait of the hidden emotional dimensions of Ride’s life.

“We had a wonderful relationship from the time we were kids until we became lovers,” said O’Shaughnessy in an interview. “I think it’s something to be proud of.”

O'Shaughnessy’s narration in the film helps fill the gaps in Ride’s undocumented personal life. The couple’s relationship remained concealed through Ride’s astronaut career, a reflection of the institutional and cultural pressures of the time.

“People didn’t like women in space,” says director Cristina Costantini. “And they especially didn’t like single women in space.”

Ride’s five-year marriage to fellow astronaut Steve Hawley is shown in the film not just as a relationship but potentially a strategic move.

As Costantini observes, it may have helped deflect scrutiny of her private life, making her more “acceptable” in the eyes of NASA leadership and the public.

NASA, DEI, and Today’s Cultural Climate

The film’s release comes during a moment of rollback on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within federal agencies. Just a week before Sally premiered at Sundance, NASA employees received emails outlining changes under Donald Trump’s anti-DEI agenda.

“The pride flag flew in space a couple years ago,” Costantini said in an interview with The Guardian. “Now all NASA employees are being asked to take down any representations of pride.”

This political backdrop adds urgency to the film’s message. The silencing that Ride once endured is being echoed in new policies that threaten visibility and inclusion.

A Complicated Hero and a Cinematic Challenge

The documentary’s unique challenge, Costantini explains, was telling both the public and private stories of Ride. NASA’s archives held thousands of reels, but the love story with O'Shaughnessy had only “five really good pictures.” To bridge that gap, the film uses animation, 16mm visuals, and narration to explore the emotional landscape of Ride’s life.

“Sally is a very confusing central subject in some ways,” said Costantini. “The public Sally is so well documented that it’s a problem… The private story had to be invented in cinematic language.”

Ride’s Own Reflections Take on New Meaning

Throughout the film, Ride’s own words — especially her reflection on space — become even more poignant in light of her personal struggles.

“I loved being weightless,” Ride once said while in orbit. “It’s a feeling of freedom.”

Costantini builds on this quote to underscore the deeper metaphor: “She escaped Earth’s orbit — Earth’s gravity — metaphorically too.”

From seeing the Earth’s “imaginary lines” from space to finally embracing her authentic self back on Earth, Ride’s journey was as much personal as it was celestial.

Why Sally Matters Now

Costantini emphasizes that the documentary was never intended to be controversial. “We made this movie not thinking it was particularly controversial. We had no idea it would be this relevant.”

But Sally is more than a biography. It’s a bold reclamation of a national icon’s full identity and a statement against the ongoing erasure of LGBTQ+ histories in science, education, and public life.

“Space was transformative for her,” said Costantini. “When she came back to Earth, she finally allowed herself to be who she really is, and love who she really loved.”
