Saquon Barkley Injury Sidelines Eagles Star After Brutal First Carry

Football fortunes can flip on a single play — and for the Philadelphia Eagles, that flip came almost immediately. The team lost starting running back Saquon Barkley on the very first offensive drive of their Week 2 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, turning what should have been a routine opening possession into an immediate injury scare.

One Carry, Zero Yards, Major Concern

Barkley was injured on his first carry of the game, a play that gained zero yards but cost far more than lost field position. The 29-year-old absorbed a violent hit from Jeffery Simmons, with several large linemen piling on top of him before he was forced to exit the contest — the kind of collision that turns a routine handoff into a moment everyone in the stadium holds their breath over.

From the Medical Tent to the Locker Room

Barkley made his way to the blue medical tent for evaluation immediately after the hit. He eventually emerged, but rather than returning to the huddle, he was seen jogging toward the locker room while favoring his left side — a visual cue that told its own story even before any official update arrived.

The Backfield Shuffles Without Him

With Barkley sidelined, Tank Bigsby stepped in to fill the void. The veteran back split playing time with Will Shipley as the Eagles' coaching staff worked to keep the offense functioning without its usual centerpiece.

The Official Word: Questionable to Return

The Eagles announced that Barkley is "questionable" to return after suffering what the team described as a stinger — an injury that sounds minor in name but carries genuine uncertainty in practice.

A Neck Collar Tells Its Own Story

Barkley eventually returned to the sideline, still in full uniform but now sporting a neck collar as part of his gear — a small but telling addition following his locker room evaluation. Despite the return to the sideline, he did not check back into the game, and notably, he stood there without his helmet, a visual suggesting his day on the field was likely finished regardless of the "questionable" designation.

Just One Carry to Show for It

By the time he exited, Barkley had logged just a single carry for zero yards — an almost cruelly brief stat line for a player typically at the center of the Eagles' offensive game plan.

Understanding the Injury Itself

For those unfamiliar with the term, a stinger is defined as "a stretch or a pinch to one or more of the nerves branching off the spinal cord," according to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Stingers are generally classified as a "mild injury," though they can still "cause tingling and numbness in the arms and fingers" — uncomfortable symptoms that, while typically temporary, are enough to warrant caution before clearing a player to return.

Who Steps Up in Barkley's Absence

Tank Bigsby is officially listed as Barkley's backup on the Eagles' depth chart. Philadelphia acquired the 25-year-old in an early-season trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2025, and the Auburn product has logged 58 carries for 344 yards and two touchdowns during his time with the Eagles.

A Depth Chart That Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Interestingly, despite Bigsby's official backup designation, Will Shipley actually saw more offensive snaps in the season opener — playing 10 compared to Bigsby's six. Shipley finished the 2025 season with 14 carries for 49 yards, giving the Eagles a second option with real game experience to lean on.

A Thin Margin for Error

The Eagles carry just three running backs on their 53-man roster, meaning Barkley's early exit immediately tightened an already lean unit. Below is a closer look at how that pecking order shakes out in his absence — a depth chart suddenly bearing far more weight than anyone expected heading into Week 2.
