Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., alongside over 30 Democratic colleagues, introduced a bill on Thursday aimed at overturning the U.S. Supreme Court's decision granting former President Donald Trump immunity for official acts.

Bill Seeks Accountability for Presidents and Vice Presidents

The proposed legislation, known as the No Kings Act, asserts that presidents and vice presidents should not have immunity for criminal acts. It also removes the Supreme Court's ability to challenge the constitutionality of this legislation and introduces additional measures to ensure accountability for these high offices.

"Given the dangerous and consequential implications of the court's ruling, legislation would be the fastest and most efficient method to correcting the grave precedent the Trump ruling presented," Schumer stated.

Schumer Trump Immunity : Jurisdictional Changes and Legal Pathways

The No Kings Act specifies that any challenges to this bill would be adjudicated in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, with appeals directed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

According to a summary of the bill, "Using the exceptions clause of Article III of the Constitution, Congress would preclude the Supreme Court from hearing any appeals to these challenges. It would further remove the Supreme Court's appellate jurisdiction to interfere with any criminal proceedings involving presidents or vice presidents on the basis that an alleged criminal act was an official action."

Presidential Endorsement and Judicial Reforms

Reversing the Trump immunity decision is one of three Supreme Court reforms endorsed by President Joe Biden earlier this week. While Biden did not mention specific bills, he also supports legislation to impose term limits on justices and to establish an enforceable code of conduct.

Schumer Trump Immunity : Democratic Support and Next Steps

All Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, except Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., are listed as sponsors of the Schumer bill. Ossoff mentioned on Wednesday that he is "still reviewing the proposals" when asked about his stance on the president's announcement.

The introduction of the No Kings Act marks a significant legislative effort to address and correct the implications of the Supreme Court's ruling on Trump immunity. Schumer and his colleagues are pushing for swift action to ensure no president or vice president is above the law.
