Severe thunderstorms are tearing across the Kansas City metro Thursday night, unleashing a fast-moving wave of dangerous weather that has already triggered tornado and thunderstorm warnings and left communities assessing early damage.

Storms began moving across the Kansas City viewing area Thursday evening, quickly escalating into a volatile system that prompted multiple tornado and thunderstorm warnings as conditions intensified across the region.

Storm Damage Reports Across the Region

Miami County law enforcement reports trees and power lines down due to a small tornado or micro burst.

The impact is already being felt in nearby communities as crews respond to scattered damage and blocked areas caused by falling debris and downed infrastructure.

In the City of Kearney, Missouri, officials are reporting damage to homes, downed trees and debris blocking roadways. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Flash Flood Warning as Heavy Rain Threat Builds

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 4 a.m. for Johnson County, Kansas and southwestern Jackson County, raising concern as intense rainfall continues to move through already saturated areas.

Communities at Risk Overnight

According to the National Weather Service, some areas that may experience flash flooding include Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Shawnee, Lenexa, Leawood, Raytown, Grandview, Belton, Prairie Village, Gardner, Merriam, Mission, De Soto, Fairway, Mission Hills, Westwood and Westwood Hills.

As the severe weather system continues pushing through the region, residents across the Kansas City metro remain under heightened alert for damaging winds, flooding rainfall and rapidly changing storm conditions overnight.
