A violent incident unfolded Thursday afternoon at Temple Israel, where authorities say a suspect rammed a truck into the synagogue before being confronted by security. The Shooting at Michigan synagogue ended with the suspect dead, while students and staff inside the building escaped unharmed.

Officials say the dramatic confrontation could have ended far worse, but swift action by security personnel prevented injuries among those inside.

Truck Crash Sparks Active Shooter Response

According to Michael Bouchard, sheriff of Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the suspect drove a truck directly through the synagogue’s doors and into a hallway.

Authorities initially responded to reports of an active shooter situation at the synagogue, located in West Bloomfield, in the Michigan Detroit metropolitan area.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News the suspect crashed the vehicle into the building, exited carrying a rifle and was confronted by synagogue security. The suspect was shot during the encounter, though Bouchard did not specify the exact circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

Authorities later confirmed the suspect died at the scene.

Students and Staff Accounted For

Despite the frightening chain of events, officials said no students or staff were injured.

Temple Israel confirmed that all 140 students and staff present in the building were safe, an outcome authorities credited to rapid security intervention.

“We’ve accounted for everybody that we believe was in the building at the time,” Bouchard said.

However, one member of the synagogue’s security team was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious during the incident. The guard was quickly pulled away by fellow team members and transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities say the guard is expected to recover.

Explosives Found Inside Suspect’s Vehicle

Investigators now face another troubling detail. Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the suspect’s body was badly burned, complicating efforts to identify the individual.

Authorities say mortar-type explosives were discovered inside the vehicle, raising concerns that the attack may have been intended to cause even greater destruction.

Bouchard said something inside the vehicle ignited during the incident, prompting investigators to treat the vehicle as a potential explosive hazard.

Out of an abundance of caution, bomb technicians are clearing the vehicle to ensure no improvised explosive devices (IEDs) remain.

Officials confirmed the suspect was the only person inside the truck.

First Responders Treated at Area Hospitals

Following the chaotic scene, Henry Ford Health said it was treating eight first responders at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital.

“Our hearts go out to the community at Temple Israel and anyone who is impacted by this frightening event,” the health system said in a statement. “There is absolutely no place for violence in our community.”

Federal and Local Agencies Respond

Multiple agencies quickly converged on the scene, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Michigan State Police, West Bloomfield police, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Kash Patel confirmed that FBI personnel were assisting in the response and investigation.

Authorities urged the public to stay away from the area while emergency crews secured the synagogue and cleared the building.

“Don’t come to the area. It’s active, it’s busy,” Bouchard said.

Community Response and Security Measures

Parents of Temple Israel students were directed to reunite with their children at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Michigan State Police announced increased patrols at places of worship across the district, and several police departments across Southeast Michigan said they were boosting security in their communities.

Temple Israel, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road, is recognized as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States, according to its website.

Notably, the FBI Detroit Field Office conducted active shooter prevention and awareness training at the synagogue earlier this year in January 2026, a preparation that now underscores the gravity of Thursday’s attack.

Leaders Condemn Violence

The Shooting at Michigan synagogue drew swift condemnation from political and community leaders.

Donald Trump addressed the incident Thursday, expressing support for the Jewish community.

“I want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all of the people in Detroit and the Detroit area following the attack on the Jewish synagogue earlier today,” Trump said. “It’s a terrible thing. We’re going to get right down to the bottom of it.”

Gretchen Whitmer said she was closely monitoring developments.

“Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan,” Whitmer said.

Dana Nessel also condemned the attack, saying antisemitism must never be tolerated.

“We must come together, stand with our neighbors and confront hate whenever it appears,” she said.

Interfaith Leaders Speak Out

Faith leaders also voiced concern and solidarity.

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, denounced the violence.

“There is no justification for anyone to direct violence toward any house of worship or religious institution,” Walid said.

As investigators continue examining the suspect’s motives and the explosives found in the vehicle, the Shooting at Michigan synagogue stands as a stark reminder of how quickly peace can shatter—and how vigilance and rapid response can prevent a tragedy from growing even larger.
