Silicon Valley Faces Reckoning After Jury Rules Social Media Platforms Addictive

Silicon Valley is confronting a wave of unease following a landmark jury decision in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Meta and YouTube were found legally responsible for creating platforms that intentionally fostered addictive behavior, contributing to the mental health struggles of a 20-year-old plaintiff known only as Kaley. After nine days of deliberation, jurors sided with her on all counts.

Within the tech industry, reactions range from attempts to minimize the ruling’s significance to anxiety that it could signal the start of broader accountability, potentially threatening the business models of U.S. social media companies.

“We're having a moment,” an industry insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC.

Inside the Companies

The verdict has prompted executives to confront a harsh reality: the public perception of their platforms may not align with the positive image the companies have cultivated for themselves.

Once celebrated for connecting people, entertaining users, and even promoting democracy worldwide, Meta and YouTube now face scrutiny over the negative impact their products may have on young users.

Both companies have announced plans to appeal the ruling, which awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and an additional $3 million in punitive damages.

At Meta, the decision is considered a setback. The company had entered the trial confident in its defense, emphasizing Kaley’s preexisting family and academic challenges that began before she started using Instagram at age nine.

Kaley argued that the platforms exacerbated her personal struggles, leaving her with body dysmorphia, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

“It was a clean sweep with respect to liability against both Google and Meta,” attorney Jayne Conroy told the BBC after the verdict. “It will matter.”

Conroy also noted, “I bet there's a lot of math going on in boardrooms at Meta, Google, Snap and TikTok as they evaluate what that means if they know thousands of cases are coming their way.”

TikTok and Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc., had been named as defendants but settled before the trial began. The companies, however, remain targets in future bellwether trials, which continue to explore whether social media companies can be held liable for designing addictive platforms to generate profit.

For now, Meta has indicated it will maintain its aggressive defense strategy. “We will continue to defend ourselves vigorously as every case is different, and we remain confident in our record of protecting teens online,” the company said Wednesday.

A Meta spokesperson added that reducing teen mental health to a single factor oversimplifies a complex issue. “Many teens rely on digital communities to connect and find belonging,” they said.

Google described YouTube as “a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site,” claiming the service had been misunderstood in court.

Regulatory Threats and Business Pressures

Former Twitter executive Bruce Daisley said social media firms have built their value on user engagement. “Effectively you've got a business which is just geared for trying to force people to spend more and more time [on their apps],” he told the BBC’s World Business Express.

Any lawsuits or regulations that disrupt this growth model are viewed as serious challenges. “The tech firms spend more on lobbying and more on PR than any other sector in the world,” Daisley said. “They are very intent on trying to win the soft influence battle to try and persuade politicians to go easy on them.”

The Trial’s Symbolic Moments

During arguments for punitive damages, Kaley’s attorney Mark Lanier used a jar of M&Ms to illustrate Meta’s wealth, with each candy representing $1 billion. Meta’s market value now sits near $1.4 trillion, or roughly 1,400 M&Ms.

“I would've thought it was likely we would have gotten a bigger number,” Lanier told reporters after the $6 million award was announced.

The verdict is being viewed as a victory by personal injury lawyers, who hope it sets the stage for eight upcoming bellwether trials.

In a separate New Mexico case, prosecutors convinced a jury that Meta facilitated child exploitation, though the company noted that the penalty was “just a fraction of what the state sought,” after authorities had requested over $2 billion.

While the Los Angeles award is modest by comparison and the jury was not unanimous, some observers caution against underestimating the ruling’s significance. “It makes sense to downplay the overall financial exposure so investors don't leave,” said Eric Goldman, associate dean and professor at Santa Clara University School of Law. “I don't think any of the social media services can afford to pay $6 million per injured user,” he added, describing social media addiction litigation as a potentially existential threat.

Goldman also noted the appeal process could change outcomes. Evidence and testimony from Kaley’s case may be reused in future trials, giving all parties a chance to refine their legal strategies as lawsuits brought by individuals, school districts, and states move through the courts.
