The Sky Tonight App is helping skywatchers make the most of June 2026. The free app offers an easy-to-use guide to the stars, planets, meteor showers, and celestial events visible throughout the month.

Whether you're a beginner learning to identify constellations or an experienced astronomer tracking planetary alignments, the app provides a comprehensive toolkit for exploring the night sky.

June brings a spectacular mix of spring and summer constellations, bright planets, meteor showers, and the annual Strawberry Moon. With several notable celestial events occurring throughout the month, astronomy enthusiasts have plenty of reasons to look up after sunset.

Sky Tonight Shows Spring Constellations Dominate the Sky

As darkness falls in June 2026, the familiar spring sky remains prominently displayed overhead.

One of the easiest star patterns to spot is the Big Dipper, positioned high in the northern sky. Skywatchers can use the two stars located at the end of the dipper's bowl to locate Polaris, commonly known as the North Star.

The handle of the Big Dipper also serves as a guide for one of astronomy's most famous star-hopping techniques: "arc to Arcturus." Following the curve of the handle leads observers to Arcturus, the brightest star in the constellation Boötes.

Nearby, the constellation Hercules rises toward the eastern sky, while Leo the Lion remains visible high in the west. To the south, the expansive constellation Virgo continues to dominate spring evenings.

Winter constellations are now fading from view. Gemini, represented by the bright twin stars Castor and Pollux, lingers low in the west-northwest before disappearing later in the season.

Summer Stars Begin to Rise

While spring constellations remain prominent, June also marks the arrival of summer's brightest stars.

The brilliant star Vega, located in the constellation Lyra, appears in the east-northeast during the early evening. Vega will become one of the most recognizable stars of summer as the season progresses.

Toward the southeast, observers can spot Scorpius the Scorpion, anchored by its bright red star Antares. Near the southern horizon, the constellations Centaurus and Lupus become visible for observers with clear southern views.

These celestial landmarks provide excellent targets for both casual stargazers and astro-photographers throughout the month.

How the Sky Tonight App Helps Stargazers

The Sky Tonight App has become a popular astronomy companion thanks to its extensive collection of observation tools.

More information is available through the official Sky Tonight website at https://skytonight.app.

Among its most useful features are:

  • Interactive Sky Tonight Map

Users can point their smartphones or tablets toward the sky and instantly identify stars, planets, constellations, satellites, and deep-sky objects in real time.

  • Augmented Reality Mode

The app overlays celestial information directly onto the camera view, creating an immersive stargazing experience.

  • Astronomy Calendar

The built-in calendar tracks important astronomical events, including meteor showers, lunar phases, eclipses, conjunctions, and planetary oppositions.

  • Time Machine Feature

Users can view how the sky appeared on previous dates or see what celestial objects will be visible in the future.

  • Stargazing Index

This forecasting tool evaluates cloud cover, moonlight, visibility conditions, and light pollution to help observers determine the best times for viewing.

  • Mobile Astrophotography Tools

The app includes a photo editor and curve generator, allowing users to plan photography sessions and create detailed astronomical images.

Additional astronomy resources can be found through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at https://www.nasa.gov and Sky & Telescope Magazine at https://skyandtelescope.org.
