In a dramatic legal twist, the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the path for the potential dismissal of Steve Bannon’s contempt of Congress conviction, sending the case back to a lower federal court where it is now widely expected to be thrown out.

Supreme Court Reopens the Door

The ruling effectively nullifies a previous appeals court decision that upheld Bannon’s 2022 conviction. The high court issued a brief, unsigned order referencing “the pending motion to dismiss the indictment,” signaling a major shift in the case’s trajectory.

Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, had been found guilty of defying congressional subpoenas tied to the January 2021 Capitol riot investigation. The conviction stemmed from his refusal to cooperate with lawmakers seeking testimony and documents.

A Symbolic Outcome After Jail Time

Despite the likely dismissal, Bannon has already served a four-month sentence at a low-security federal prison in Connecticut. As a result, any reversal of the conviction would carry more symbolic weight than practical consequence.

The case had previously survived scrutiny in lower courts, with an appeals panel affirming the jury’s verdict. However, the Supreme Court’s latest move resets the legal process, placing the matter back in the hands of a Washington, D.C. federal court.

Bannon, a central figure in Trump’s political orbit for over a decade, played a pivotal role in the 2016 presidential campaign and later served as a White House adviser during Trump’s first term. Outside government, he has remained a vocal supporter, even endorsing the controversial idea of a third presidential term—despite constitutional limits.

Under the administration of Joe Biden, federal prosecutors initially pursued the case, and the Supreme Court had earlier declined to intervene when Bannon sought relief from his sentence.
