Trump May Replace Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff

Susie Wiles, President Donald Trump's longtime chief of staff and one of his most trusted political advisers, is reportedly facing questions about her future in the White House.  Trump is reportedly privately discussing possible replacements.

According to a report by Politico, the president has consulted allies about whether to replace Wiles, raising questions about the state of their relationship and the influence she continues to hold over the administration. Trump has publicly pushed back against the report, saying Wiles has his “COMPLETE confidence.”

The reported discussions come after months in which Wiles has managed the White House's internal operations during Trump's second term. Her position has made her a central figure in the administration, but recent decisions made without her apparent involvement have fueled speculation about whether her influence is changing.

Susie Wiles' Political Career and Rise to the White House

Wiles is a veteran Republican political strategist who built her career through campaign management and political consulting, particularly in Florida. She became a significant force in Trump's political operation by helping organize his 2024 presidential campaign.

Known for her disciplined approach and behind-the-scenes management, Wiles earned a reputation as a key figure in Trump's inner circle. Trump has previously praised her as the “ice maiden,” a description reflecting her reputation for remaining composed and focused under pressure.

When Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, Wiles became the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. The position places her at the center of presidential decision-making, requiring coordination among senior advisers, federal agencies, congressional leaders and the president himself.

Wiles has also been credited by some Republican officials with maintaining a more controlled internal environment than the one that characterized Trump's first administration. Her supporters have pointed to fewer public disputes and a more disciplined approach to White House operations.

In March 2026 she announced that she was in the early stages of breast cancer. Wiles has continued to work while she is undergoing treatment.

Trump Reportedly Consults Allies About Replacements

Politico reported that Trump has asked friends and political allies whether he should replace Wiles, citing four people familiar with the conversations. According to the report, several names have emerged as possible successors, although no formal decision to remove Wiles has been announced.

Among those reportedly discussed is Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff known for his work on immigration policy and other major administration initiatives. Miller has long been an influential figure in Trump's political operation.

Other names mentioned include Randy Levine, a New York Yankees executive and longtime Republican figure; Steve Witkoff, Trump's friend and diplomatic envoy; and Bill Pulte, who leads the federal housing agency.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has also reportedly been discussed as a possible candidate. Some of his allies have argued that his experience in congressional leadership could be useful if Republicans face a Democratic-controlled House.

The potential candidates represent different approaches to the chief of staff role, from policy enforcement and presidential loyalty to congressional negotiation and administrative management. However, the reported discussions do not establish that Trump has decided to make a change.

Report Says Wiles Has Lost Support From Some Allies

Latest reports describe frustration among some Republicans who believe Wiles has alienated political figures during her time in the administration. One Republican operative quoted in the report said she had “burned a lot of people.”

The comments suggest that Wiles' management style may have created tensions with some people seeking access to the president or influence over White House decisions. However, the reported criticism reflects the views of individual sources rather than an established consensus among Republicans.

The chief of staff position routinely involves difficult decisions about access, staffing and competing policy priorities. Those responsibilities can generate conflict even within a politically aligned administration.

Press Secretary Appointment Raises Questions About Wiles' Influence

Recent staffing decisions have added to speculation about Wiles' standing. The supplied report says Trump selected Katie Zacharia to replace Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary without following Wiles' apparent preference for another candidate.

According to The Independent's reporting, Wiles had been attempting to recruit CNN commentator Scott Jennings for the position. The report said she favored a candidate with experience in political communications and an understanding of the demands of the White House press briefing room.

Trump reportedly moved ahead with Zacharia while Wiles was unavailable, a decision that some administration observers interpreted as evidence that the president was making major personnel choices without consulting his chief of staff.

Zacharia's first briefing also attracted negative media attention, according to the supplied account. The controversy surrounding the appointment has contributed to questions about how much influence Wiles retains over staffing decisions.

Trump Rejects Report of a Possible Shake-Up

Despite the reported conversations, Trump denied that he was preparing to remove Wiles. In a statement to Politico, he said she had his “COMPLETE confidence” and criticized the publication's reporting.

Trump's response offers a public counterpoint to the accounts from people who said he had discussed potential replacements privately. At present, the reported conversations and the president's public statement remain competing indications of the state of the relationship.

There has been no confirmed announcement that Wiles will leave her position or that a successor has been selected.

What Comes Next for the White House Chief of Staff?

Wiles' future could have consequences for how the administration manages policy, personnel and congressional relations. The chief of staff often serves as a gatekeeper to the president while coordinating competing interests among advisers and cabinet officials.

If Trump eventually chooses a new chief of staff, the decision could signal a shift in management priorities or an effort to prepare for a more difficult relationship with Congress. If Wiles remains, the controversy could still raise questions about her authority and the degree to which the president relies on her advice.

For now, the reports highlight uncertainty surrounding one of the most influential positions in the White House. Trump's public expression of confidence in Wiles suggests he is not announcing an immediate change, while the reported private conversations indicate that the possibility of a shake-up has at least been discussed.
