Suspect Arrested in UW Student Killing After 31-Year-Old Turns Himself In

Suspect arrested in UW student killing

The arrest came under the cover of night, four days after a 19-year-old University of Washington student was found bleeding in a campus laundry room with a broken door — a space that residents say had been left in disrepair for months. On Thursday morning, Seattle police announced that a suspect in the fatal stabbing was finally in custody.

The 31-year-old man, whose identity has not been publicly released by authorities, walked into the Bellevue Police Department at approximately 10:20 p.m. Wednesday and surrendered himself. He is now booked at the King County Jail as investigators continue to piece together the events of a Sunday night that shattered a campus community.

The Night a Campus Was Shaken

At approximately 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Seattle Police Department officers rushed to Nordheim Court — a housing facility on the UW campus — after reports of a stabbing. What they found inside a ground-floor laundry room stopped them cold: a young student, mortally wounded, in a space that should have been secure.

The victim, a transgender woman and UW student, has not been publicly identified by police. Her age — 19 — and the location where she was found have become grim focal points of a conversation now reverberating far beyond the Seattle campus, touching questions of campus safety, institutional accountability, and the vulnerability of transgender students in an increasingly hostile national climate.

A Broken Door, a Broken Promise of Safety

In the days since the killing, residents of Nordheim Court have spoken out with a detail as troubling as it is telling: the laundry room door where the student was found had been broken for months. Not days. Months.

That revelation has cast a long shadow over Greystar, the private property management company contracted to operate Nordheim Court under a public-private partnership arrangement with the university. According to UW spokesperson Victor Balta, Greystar is solely responsible for managing the facility and handling all maintenance requests within the community.

The company did not respond to media requests for comment.

University and City Leaders Speak Out

The killing forced institutional voices into action. UW President Robert Jones addressed the campus in a statement Monday evening, taking careful note of who the victim was and what her death may mean to those who knew her — or simply shared her identity.

"While investigators have not yet identified a suspect or a motive, I want to recognize that when violence affects a member of our LGBTQIA+ community, it can cause additional distress," Jones wrote. He confirmed that the university's Division of Student Life was actively reaching out to affected students and communities, providing support and resources to help them navigate what he called "a very difficult ordeal."

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson joined the chorus of official grief, stating that her office was coordinating with both the university and the UW Q Center to provide targeted support to the communities surrounding the young transgender woman.

"Every young person deserves not just to feel, but to be safe, supported, and surrounded by a community that believes in them and in their future," Wilson wrote — words that, in the context of a preventable death inside a broken-doored laundry room, carry the full weight of institutional failure.

Investigation Ongoing as Questions Multiply

The arrest closes one chapter of this case — the search for a suspect — but opens several others. Investigators have not established a motive, and the question of whether the killing was a hate crime targeting the victim because of her gender identity remains unanswered and under active investigation.

What is clear is this: a 19-year-old woman went to do her laundry on a Sunday night and never came back. A door that should have been fixed was not. A company responsible for her safety did not respond to questions. And a university community is now grappling with a grief that cuts across the ordinary boundaries of campus tragedy — into the deeper, harder terrain of who gets to feel safe, and who does not.
