Suspect in Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting Declared Himself “Friendly Federal Assassin” Before Attack

The glamour of Washington’s most high-profile media event shattered in seconds Saturday night when gunfire erupted just feet from the ballroom where President Donald Trump was preparing to speak. Panic swept through the White House correspondents’ dinner as Secret Service agents rushed to neutralize a suspect who, authorities say, had come with a mission to kill.

A Calculated Path to Violence

Investigators have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. A part-time teacher, former engineering student and video game designer, Allen allegedly planned his approach with precision.

Weeks before the event, he booked a room at the Washington Hilton. Then he traveled across the country by train, moving from outside Los Angeles to Chicago and finally to Washington, D.C., law enforcement officials said.

Moments before the attack, he sent a message to family members describing himself as a "friendly federal assassin" and signaling what he was about to do.

A Direct Threat to Power

Authorities say Allen stormed security checkpoints around 8:30 p.m., exchanging gunfire with Secret Service agents as he pushed toward high-ranking officials. His alleged goal was chilling.

"It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks in the administration, likely including the president," Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said during an interview with NBC’s "Meet the Press."

The chaos forced the evacuation of Trump and several cabinet members from the event.

Despite the violence, only one person was injured, a Secret Service agent whose bulletproof vest absorbed a shot to the chest.

The Letter That Raised Alarm

Minutes before the shooting, Allen sent a message to his family that is now central to the investigation.

"I don’t expect forgiveness, but if I could have seen any other way to get this close, I would have taken it," he wrote.

The message, later confirmed by law enforcement officials, revealed deep political anger but stopped short of naming Trump directly. Still, its intent was unmistakable.

"I am a citizen of the United States of America," he wrote. "What my representatives do reflects on me."

He described a plan to target administration officials "prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest" and added a chilling warning.

"I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary … but I really hope it doesn’t come to that."

Warning Signs and Missed Signals

After receiving the message, Allen’s brother contacted police in New London, Connecticut. But by then, the attack had already unfolded.

Family members later told investigators that Allen was prone to making "radical statements" and often spoke about wanting to fix what he saw as problems in the world.

Authorities say he had purchased multiple firearms years earlier and stored them at his parents’ home.

Yet despite these warning signs, officials found no criminal history and no prior law enforcement concerns tied to Allen.

A Life That Seemed Ordinary

Online profiles and interviews paint a starkly different picture of the suspect.

Allen earned a mechanical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 and later completed a master’s in computer science. He worked as a tutor and was named "Teacher of the Month" in December 2024 by his employer.

Former classmates and professors described him as polite, focused and unremarkable.

"He was a very good student indeed, always sitting in the first row of my class, paying attention, and frequently emailing me with coursework questions. Soft spoken, very polite, a good fellow," said professor Bin Tang.

A former dormmate recalled him simply as "a very nice guy.”

Allen also developed a nonviolent video game and once worked on assistive technology for wheelchair users, highlighting a background that now appears at odds with the violence he is accused of.

Shock in a Quiet Neighborhood

Back in Torrance, neighbors struggled to reconcile the news.

"This is a quiet neighborhood. We moved here because it was super safe," said neighbor James Costello.

Others described Allen and his family as friendly and peaceful, people who exchanged simple greetings and kept to themselves.

"He seemed just like a completely average guy," said Max Harris, a student Allen had tutored. "I never would have expected anything like this. … It’s really just bizarre."

Hours after the shooting, FBI and Secret Service agents surrounded the family home, searching for answers as stunned residents watched from behind police tape.

What Comes Next

Allen is expected to face serious federal charges, including assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted, he could face more than a decade in prison.

He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Washington on Monday.

"This individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could," U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said.

A Nation on Edge

As investigators continue piecing together his motives, the attack has raised urgent questions about security, political extremism and how a man described by many as ordinary could allegedly plan such a high-stakes act of violence.

For now, one thing is clear. What was meant to be a night of political satire and celebration turned into a stark reminder of how quickly danger can erupt at the highest levels of power.
